Tech Clinic / PC should I just trash it?

I'm 16, so i know a bit about computer hardwear, but not about the realy technical stuff.
I have this pc downstairs, i bought it around 2000. it came with windows ME, and worked perfectly.

A few years ago my mom got her freind to install windows 2000 but it didnt realy work, so she got her other freind to install windows XP pro. he told us that when the first guy installed 2000 it damaged something. i cant remember what because i was like 12 at the time. i think it was the drivers or partitions, but i'm not shure. he did get pro installed.

well anyways it hasnt realy worked, it takes about an hour to start up, 20 mins to open the start menu, its always running out of virtual memory, and its so slow that it wont even support a virus scanner. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

what would cause it to be so bad? and would it be posible to fix? Ive been thinking about building a gaming pc, so if i cant get this one working is their any parts I can use from it?

Its a Compaq Presario 5WV257 5000 series.

700 MHz AMD Duron Processor
64 MB Memory
8 MV Nvidia TNT2 Graphics
20 GB Hard Drive
56 K Modem

So should I try to fix it, or should I just use it for parts in my game PC? Would a new processor fix it? 700MHz seems realy low.

ps. this was my first pc.... so it has some sentimental value. I'd like to see it used for something, lol http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
