Tech Clinic / Frozen

Hey guys, I've got a bit of a problem that's only started over last few months
Basically when I use any media application (windows media, real player, divx etc) my computer will sometimes play it fine, but most of the time the file with either crash halfway through and the program needs to be closed. But after a few hours once putting a media file on the computer will just freeze completely, as in theres nothing you can do, can't select or exit, I need to actually physically restart the PC to get it working again. This same problem occurs when using viewing media through flash or java programs.
I'm on a PC running windows XP professional SP2, 1GB RAM, AMD Athlon 2400+, 40 GB HDD
