Tech Clinic / WINDOWS INSTALLATION PROBLEMS
« on: August 11, 2004, 03:52:33 AM »
ok here we go

this is my system
Gigabyte GA-7n400Pro2
AMD 2500+ barton oc to 3200+
Geil 512 ddr400
Maxtor 80 Gb 7200rpm Sata
Etc etc

The other day i was at a lan, nothing special happened except a major hit of lag and a bsod 2-4 times. Apart from that it was dandy for a while. The next time i booted my com i couldnt do anyhting and i got one billion bsod's.

So i decided to backup and format. I formatted and started the copying stage of the installation and 78% i get a copying error...so i decide to try it again, same thing. I do this with 3 different copies of windows xp (home, prof, prof sp1) and i still get the same thing. I then try 98se and it works!!! O, now when i go to install somethings it will get some errors and stuff and its overall really not cool.

So now im stuck and i have tryed so many things...replaced cd-rom drives, changed bios settings, Sata drivers, Underclocking, Bios reset and on and on. So yeah, im pretty stuck as to what it is...Yeah, thanks for your help/time

Tech Clinic / SATA and XP Problems
sata & xp
I have ga7n400 with sata drive
also have intel 875 with sata
both have bluescreen problems.

There is a problem when you are accessing the dvd on pata and sata at the
same time. So if you are installing xp onto a sata drive then you are rapidly reading pata (cd/dvd) ad copying files to your sata drive. I was getting file not found miscompares lockups and bluescreens if you retry it continues. There is obviously some firmware/driver problem. This is what we get for being on the bleeding edge of technology (sata). Even after I got xp installed if you play a movie or install office xp you get bluescreens and file errors. The errors dont repeat because it is a firmware/chipset problem - its FLAKY.

I did get it working best by:
putting the dvd on ide3 - ( thats the raid ports ).
use f6 to install with si3112 drive diskette
enable scsi, sata and base in bios.
enable raid in ata mode not raid mode.

you might try making the cd run in pio mode not dma - that might fix it too....
i have the same mobo (ga7n400 pro 2) with the same problem and i still cant get it working. i got a single sata maxtor 80 gig and i have basically tried everything.
help me before i hurt myself..
