Software / Alcohol 120%
« on: February 16, 2005, 03:53:10 PM »
Hi there,

I installed a trial version of Alcohol 120 ages ago and I never used it so I uninstalled / deleted it (or so I thought). The other day I decided that I would install the program again. When I try to install it I get a messege saying "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this product cannot continue" and then it tells me to uninstall the version I have using Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. When I go to Add/Remove, A120% is listed but when I click on remove I get an error messege - "Error 1606. Could not access location".

Any ideas as how I can resolve this problem?

Cheers,

Chris

Thanks Guestolo - it's a relief to know that my PC is now free of malicious junk etc.  I'll install and run SpywareBlaster when I return home from work (not long to go now  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' /> )

However, there is still no mention of my DVD and CD drives on my computer.  Was the XP_DVD\CD fix programme meant to solve this?

Cheers,

Chris

PS - An email my friend sent to me today was blocked by my firms virus software.  Have you got any idea what virus / trojan this message relates to as I'm sure his PC is virus free.

The virus was identified as: >>> Possible MalWare 'Exploit/Phishing-msn.com-85c4' variant found in '1733325_7X_PM8_EMQ_MH__message.htm'. Heuristics score: 400

OK, my computer has hopefully been cleaned up a bit - I've removed the listed HJT entries, ran the CD/DVD fix programme and also carried out the other instructions.

The version of Ad-aware I am using is:
Ad-aware SE Personal
Reference Number SE1R25 11.01.2005
Internal Build:30

Here is my new HJT log:

Tech Clinic / "Missing" Dvd And Cd Drives
« on: January 15, 2005, 12:05:32 PM »
Thanks very much for the advice.  I've scanned my PC with HJT and the resultant log is posted below.  To answer your other questions, I intalled over the top of my old installation - a total clean install seemed a bit daunting!

I keep my virus scanner up to date and I use Adaware quite often so I doubt that my computer had anything "dodgy" on it when I installed.  I now also use Firefox, and ever since switching to it Adaware has had nothing to find (which must be good!)

I checked for error messages in Device Manager and there isn't even a mention of either of my drives on it.  Could it be something to do with my Bios?

I know, in theory, how to edit my registry but I wouldn't where to start and what to edit.  I have Resistry Mechanic 4 installed which claims to tidy and clean up my registry.

Again, any help you could give me would me much appreciated.

All the best,

Chris

Tech Clinic / "Missing" Dvd And Cd Drives
« on: January 13, 2005, 07:43:37 AM »
When I installed the Windows SP2 update it messed my PC up. The computer would continually restart itself over and over and over again, never reaching the Windows XP logo screen. To fix this I reinstalled Windows from the CD I had.

This did the trick and my computer booted up fine. The only problem being that now my DVD drive and my CD drives are no longer recognised. Any ideas as to why this is and how I can get them back? I’ve had the computer scan for new hardware and it doesn’t seem to “see” them. When I turn on my PC both of the drives lights come on as it boots up so there is at least power going to them.

Software / Windows SP2 has knackered my PC
« on: October 13, 2004, 11:25:57 AM »
Hullo there people,

I was wondering if any of you could help me with a major problem I have. I eventually got around to installing Windows SP2 on Saturday night (fool that I am!) Once it had downloaded I was asked to restart my PC, which I did. My PC shut down, started powering up again, the Windows XP logo appeared on my monitor and then.........it restarted itself again, and again, and again. (That's enough restarts for now). I've checked the MS knowledge bases and the only reference I can find is http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...ct=windowsxpsp2 which is not relevant to me.

I've tried to start my PC in safe mode and also go back to the last good configuration but this fails to do any good and the damned computer will just restart again.

The only thing I can think of which may be affecting my computer is that I ran Ad-aware earlier on in the day and it located something which it couldn't remove at the time and asked whether it should remove it when I next restarted my PC (which just happened to be the SP2 restart).

I'd be grateful if someone could advise me what to do as I am now at a loss.

Thanks in advance,

Chris
