Tech Clinic / Can't log on properly...
« on: August 31, 2007, 06:05:46 PM »
it seems you've lost permissions to the explorer.exe, personally i'd see if you can launch system restore by doing the same thing getting the "create new task" box and instead type this %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe  Hopefully you'll get the system restore gui up so you can restore to an earlier point or if you installed something thats potentially caused the issue.

Sounds like your explorer process is not starting. To workaround it to enable you to do the hijack this install, when you press ALT + CTRL + DELETE and get the task manager come up on the application tab. at the top you should see "File" then select "New Task (Run)" and you will get a "Create New Task" box appear, type EXPLORER in there and click OK then hopefully your start bar should be back so you can do further troubleshooting.

Hardware / XP internet woes

Doesn't sound like your machine is picking up the ISP's DNS addresses which is necessary to translate domain names(i.e google.com) into Ip Addresses for you to be able to surf the net. Have you run an "ipconfig /all" in the command prompt to at least make sure your computer is picking up the ISP DNS addresses from her router?

Tech Clinic / NTFS Permission problem
« on: August 31, 2007, 09:11:14 AM »
as far as im aware because you have granted Read permission to the folder that will still allow users to copy the file because by doing this your not actually changing anything in that folder or to the file. As you've experienced you cannot paste or rename the file as that is going against the effective permissions you've allowed. I don't think there is any NTFS permission that will stop a user from copying a file that they have read/list/execute permissions to. thats my understanding of NTFS permission for what its worth anyhoo

have you tried downloading the latest Sound drivers from IBM Supportpage and reinstalling? couldnt see it mentioned in the previous threads so forgive my ageing eyesight if i missed it. Sometimes the simple things work if untried.
