Tech Clinic / File Sharing between Vista and XP via a Cross Over Cable

I am Having difficulty with a basic networking issue. I can not share files between my vista and xp laptops via a cross over cable.  Both comps are on the same subnet mask and is public. Can anyone help. I would really appreciate it. Thankyou in advance.
