Tech Clinic / Sending a fax by computer – how?
« on: March 10, 2005, 01:40:09 PM »
Compared to the problems that some guys are having mine is simple.

What do I need to send a fax using my computer? I’m not too interested in receiving faxes but if it is all part of the package then OK.

I have a Hewlett Packard 3500c series scanner and a Canon S500 printer both in perfect working order.

My computer runs Windows XP fully updated. I’m on Broadband where I can connect to the Internet and also use my phone at the same time.

Please tell me that it will be something simple like a bit of software where I can type in the telephone number and the path to where the scanned document is held, hit a button and off it goes. Or is that asking too much?

Many thanks in advance.

Idle Chat / If Windows changed its name? What to call it ?

What about PATCHES?

Because Windows is nothing more than the basic with loads of patches to patch up the patches that patched up the previous patches, which unwittingly caused a problem. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':o\' />

Idle Chat / Mystery Processes
« on: February 28, 2005, 11:13:55 AM »
If you are certain that your machine is clean don’t worry about it. The chances are that your machine hasn’t sent an infected message.

For the future what you can do is put your own email address in your address book and then if something nasty does get onto your machine and starts to send out emails you will get one also and thus know about it. Put your own email address in three times, once so that it is near the top of your list once in the middle and once near the end because some viruses only use the top or bottom few in your address book.

Hope that helps.

Tech Clinic / Unexplained computer crashes!!
« on: February 28, 2005, 10:01:42 AM »
Does anyone else experience their computer shutting down out of the blue whilst surfing?

What happens is this; I can be surfing away when suddenly the screen goes black and the computer goes through the process of re-booting and checking the hard drives. Eventually when my computer is back up and running, when I launch Outlook Express the last email in line shows “Outlook Express did not shutdown correctly” instead of the email’s text.

Clicking on another email and back onto the last one restores that email’s text.

Now I didn’t close OE so who did and how and how do you close OE incorrectly?

Even if I kill the mains power and switch it on again OE comes up normally after the computer has gone through its booting up routine.

I currently run Windows XP with all the updates up to date including Service Pack 2 but I have experienced the same when I used to run ME so it can’t be the OS – can it?

It can’t be a stray email arriving because OE doesn’t collect any emails until I click the Send/Receive button and I don’t do that until MailWasher has had a look at my ISP mailbox and got rid of the rubbish. So it can only be some web site somewhere. Or can it?

This crashing can happen two or three times in about ten hours for a few days and then no problems for a week or more.

I never get any crashing problems when I am off-line, even if I have OE running while I clear deleted emails and tidying things up.

In a Draconian attempt to resolve the problem I bought a brand new hard drive installed it, partitioned and formatted it and re-installed Windows ME and upgraded to XP just like my original. Before even getting to connected to the Internet I re-installed ZoneAlarm Pro, AVG Pro, AdAware, Spybot, Pest Patrol, Trojan Remover, Anonymizer and System Mechanic and set all the various parameters to give me maximum protection from unwanted things. I ran all the above to check my computer and found absolutely nothing – as I should have.

As soon as I had established my Internet connection I downloaded all the various updates including Windows Service Pack2 etc.

Once again I did a full scan with everything and found nothing.

I re-installed all the different software that I had before, did yet another scan and found nothing.

Problem solved I thought! Er! No! My computer still crashes and OE still comes up to tell me, “Outlook Express did not shutdown correctly”.

Anyone any ideas?

By the way what’s all this HiJacked stuff about?
