Tech Clinic / Folder protection dilemma
Giving User's Admin privileges, then trying to Limit their useage from Parent to Child folders
Seems might be a tough task

Eg..I'm going to give you full control over this computer as Admin
But, I'm going to create a folder and not allow you full control over it, fine, that can be done
But then I want to make a Child folder inside that folder and Only give you control over any other folder but One in the Parent folder
Doesn't sound much like an Admin account, should maybe be limited, even then you would still run into problems with the way you want to set it
There are small utilitites that may help you out, but the better ones are probably paid versions
Could you please provide some names of these utilities? Paid or not is not an issue as long as encryption or hiding of folders & files is not performed I would not mind at all to solve this issue with a 3rd party resource. And if it is a paid version that would be well spent $.Thanks in advance for your support! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

http://www.wikihow.com/Protect-Folders-and...ssional-Edition

Take note of Step 5
Thanks for your reply!

I did come across that site during my "quest" but I did not seem to find a solution there, even though I must recognize that it was one of the most explanatory layout I have actually seen.

In order to bring everybody up to speed that's what I did so far:

1) I have created a "PARENT FOLDER" and inside it I have created a "CHILD FOLDER".

2) In the "PARENT FOLDER" I have unchecked "Inherit", removed all users and added "DENY: DELETE for THIS FOLDER AND SUBFOLDERS" for the current user. I have also added "ALLOW: LIST FOLDER/READ DATA, CREATE FILES/WRITE DATA, CREATE FOLDERS/APPEND DATA, READ PERMISSIONS for THIS FOLDER ONLY" for the current user.

3) In the "CHILD FOLDER" I have unchecked "Inherit", removed all users and added "DENY: DELETE for THIS FOLDER ONLY" for the current user. I have also added "ALLOW: FULL CONTROL except DELETE for THIS FOLDER ONLY" for the current user.

In this way both PARENT & CHILD folders cannot be deleted, the CHILD folder cannot be renamed and the subfolders and files inside the CHILD folder can be freely renamed, accessed/updated and deleted.

The only two remaining issues are:

- The PARENT folder can still be renamed.
- If I create new folders at the level of the CHILD folder, RENAME & DELETE are automatically denied.

I would like to solve these 2 pesky matters before I will have grandchildren to take care of and... Mind you... I do not have children yet!!! http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Tech Clinic / Folder protection dilemma

Hi Everybody,

I have installed XP Pro SP3 on several computers, all of them with one user only, who has administrator rights. No network connections.

On all of these computers I have a "PARENT Folder" that contains a "CHILD Folder".

I wish to prevent users from deleting, moving or renaming both the "PARENT Folder" and the "CHILD Folder".

At the same time I wish to allow users to:

- Create, rename and delete subfolders and files inside the "CHILD Folder"

- Create, rename and delete NEW subfolders and files inside the "PARENT Folder" (at the same level of the "CHILD Folder").

File System is NTFS and "Use simple file sharing" has been unchecked.

So far I managed to achieve part (say 85%) of my objective: The only two remaining problems are:

- The PARENT folder can still be renamed.
- If I create new folders at the level of the CHILD folder, RENAME & DELETE are automatically denied.

Any suggestion to complete my "mission" would be highly appreciated. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />
