Tech Clinic / CPU Usage at 100%
« on: April 24, 2005, 01:27:29 PM »
Bingo!  That did it.  I'm not running 2005, but this did the trick anyway.  I'm up in normal mode, and all is well.  I'll send that feedback to Trend as well.

Thanks for the help!

Tech Clinic / CPU Usage at 100%
« on: April 24, 2005, 12:08:58 PM »
Hi,
I'm having a problem with my PC.  It started when my wife was registering for a free Disne cruise through an e-mail offering from Fisher-Price.  The e-mail looked legitimate, and we do subscribe to the fisher price mailer, so I don't believe it was 'malicious'.

In any case, after clicking on the e-mail, the PC seemed to lock up.  After about 15 min of un-responsiveness, I performed a hard-shud-down.  There was no response from any normal shut-down methods (start-menu and task manager).

Since then, any atempt to do anything has been EXTREAMELY slow.  At one point, I was able to get into the task manager.  From here, I could see that CPU usage is constantly at 100% (from the performance tab) and the the 'System' process cycles through values from 92 to 98% CPU usage.

Now, on attempts to start-up, the system will come to the 'user' selection screen.  After selecting a user (it seems any of the current users, but I've only tried 2 of the 4, with the same results), it seems to hang up.  It does proceed a little, but VERY slowly, and never seems to make it to the normal desk-top.  The farthest it has now gotten is displaying the desk-top graphic, but none of the desk-top icons or the task bar appear.

I AM able to start up in safe mode, but I'm not sure where to go from there.

I took this from one of my earlier posts, so you can see what version of windows I'm running.  I've had a couple auto-updates since then, but I don't recall the details of the changes.

I'm posting this from an alternate PC, so i don't know if I'll be able to post any logs.

Any thoughts on what I can do?

Just a quick bump to see if you have any comments on the new log.

However, I've not had a problem with wither the virus or the explorer window poppint up since performing you last reccomended steps, so it seems like that did the trick.

Thanks

Thanks much for your help!

First, I took another look at my virus scan logs.  As it turns out, I've had a mix of both TROJ_SMALL.UP and TROJ_SMALL.SM over the course of the last week or so.  In each case, PC-cillin has detected and quarantined the file, and I've subsequently deleated it through PC-cillin.

Now, on to your instructions:

---------------
Find and delete this file or folder, if found
C:\WINDOWS\System32\prvdi.exe <-file

C:\Program Files\WebSiteViewer <-folder
---------------
Neither of these were present.  However, prvdi.exe is the name of the file that has been detected and deleated by PC-cillin for TROJ_SMALL.UP.  By recollection, the file name associated with TROJ_SMALL.SM was access.exe.

Here is a fresh hijackthis log:

Tech Clinic / itallnowdone.com window opening on it's own
« on: March 30, 2005, 04:26:39 PM »
I'm having a problem where an Internet explorer window open on my PC on it's own.  It's a full-screen window that is completely blank (white).

In addition, I have, and am having trouble removing TROJ_SMALL.UP.
I've tried the Semantic removal instructions, but I've never been able to find the running operations that they suggest closing as part of the instructions.

I'm running Trend Micro PC-cillin with the latest update patches (auto updates pretty much daily) which continues to detect and quarantine a file called prvdi.exe which I'll delete from the quarantine folder as soon as it's detected.

Here is a hijackthis log:
