Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are essentially the same animal.

Check in your registry for missing or broken keys. This whitepaper on adding items should give you some help.

empty is correct

Google "knoppix+live+cd" you will be amazed at what you can do with Windows XP or 2000 with a linux live cd. Say goodbye to your account with lesser permissions.

Software / Network between computers

I have heard of this before, for some reason XP does not like to share out or use shared out printers. For my network which has 98 2000 Pro and XP Pro I came up with a different solution for sharing out the printer. Rather than conecting the printer directly to a box, you can spend around $40 USD at CompUSA and buy a "print server" it's essentially a small box that connects to your printer via USB cable and has an RJ-45 jack on it so it plugs directly into your network. You use the administration utility that comes with it assign it an IP on your domain and your in business. The downside to this is I had to connect the printer to each machine before hand to install the drivers as they did not want to auto detect from a networked address. Once done and connected to your network you simply go onto each machine and change the port of the printer to point to the location of the IP. To me $40 is less than wasting hours possibly days to come up with a solution. I have known people who have gotten the printer to work, but only for short periods and it is spotty at best.

Please follow up and let me know how you make out.

No worries, how about a list of your running processes from Taskmanager, track down those processes vital, stiffle the rest. Check your startup folder (yeah its 3rd grade, but im still seeing them put there) , check in the registry under any Run RunOnce RunOnceEx folders for out of place start ups or calls to user32dll.exe or svchost.exe that use the /s switch. This is a good jumping off point. You could of course always roll back to last known good configuration if using XP with system restore enabled.

I suggest once you are clean again give mozilla a shot. Excellent browser. Though no browser can give you 100% security it has alot of the "features" ( creavices that spyware distros use to infect ) disabled by default.

Try ensuring the domains as above post suggests, also I would suggest checking your router. A simple ping of the router should suffice.

If this still yeilds 0 results I would suggest dispensing with the Wizard crap and manually setting up your network. it isn't as much work as it sounds, this is the only way to be sure that the IP's subnets and domain are all correct. You also never specified whether or not you had enabled file sharing between them. Make sure you have or you will see nothing. I think on the one you said you were able to see the shared folder so this one has to have a networked share.

On my home network I run 5 pcs and a linux box as my router. I have 1 linux, 1 XP pro, 1 win98, and 2 2k pro, all can see each other and share certain folders between each other. Note I didn't have to sacrifice anything to a Pagan god in order to get my network up and running, a little reading and some snooping and I think you can solve the issue.
