Tech Clinic / Unsupported printer driver
« on: October 02, 2011, 10:38:46 AM »
I'm not sure what it was but when I went on the Canon website using my laptop to download the add-on, no drop-down menu for the OS was on the Drivers screen.  I used my friend's pc, went onto the Canon site, found the file I was looking for, and saved it to a stick.  I've since ran it on my laptop and everything is working great.

Thanks for the help.

Tech Clinic / Unsupported printer driver
« on: October 01, 2011, 02:48:17 PM »
I tried installing the Easy Photo Print from the printer installation disc.  A message came up telling me I couldn't use it with Windows 7.  I went online and downloaded a newer version from Canon that works with Win 7.  Canon Easy Print EX Version 3.2.0  The program doesn't see my printer.  I tried using my printer installation disc but it's not compatible with Win 7.  My pc recognized the printer and I'm able to use it with other programs but not the Easy Print one.

I have all my updates already installed.

Your link directed me to Canon.  I've been through that page a dozen times but I can't find any driver update download.  I don't see it on the page.  Am I missing it?

Tech Clinic / Unsupported printer driver
« on: October 01, 2011, 02:06:52 PM »
I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 7.  When I tried to reinstall my printer software, I received a message saying something along the lines it wouldn't work on Windows 7.  Canon Easy Print program also tells me I have an unsupported printer and won't allow me to print.  I have a Canon Pixma iP6000D printer.  I've searched for drivers to download to solve the issue but I'm either being directed to Canon who doesn't have anything for me to download or I'm directed to websites asking me to join up, give my cell phone number and email, etc.  I just want the drivers so I can use my Canon Easy Print software. I'm able to use the printer for other things, just not with the Easy Print program, which I don't want to give up.

I did everything you suggested but it didn't work.  What I decided to do is make another user profile with administrator rights.  I then logged into the bank and I was allowed access.  Now I'll just transfer my files and desktop to the new user and delete the profile that won't allow me access.  Thank you for trying.

Tech Clinic / Login error # 1504
« on: December 10, 2009, 06:01:03 PM »
First let me clear up something...I know I can open as many windows as I want to view on one screen.  Whether or not I want to use a program to do this is my personal preference.

User profiles in windows does have an effect on accessing my bank login.  Let's call my user profiles "A" (for Admin rights) and "L" (for limited rights).  IE works fine...there's no problem with my browser.  When I used "A" I could log into the bank account.  When I used "L", I could not.  For personal reasons I decided to make one user profile.

I'm able to go to the bank's website.  I enter my user id and password and then another window pops up with the error code of # 1504.

I can log in using another pc with no problem.  This tells me it has something to do with my user settings and maybe the limited access rights from profile "L" were somehow written over the settings on profile "A".

Let me explain how my son, not me, performed the process of deleting my other user profiles so that I only use one.  He installed a useful program called Free Commander that lets you view two files on a split screen.  He then proceeded to copy/replace some of the items from the users I wanted deleted into the one user profile I wanted to keep.  He wasn't taking his time with this process and I feel he may have copied some settings in their profiles and overwrote my settings that did allow me to access my bank account.

That's not a solution.  My login worked fine before in IE and now it doesn't.

I decided to delete my extra user profiles on my pc and use just one, which has administrator rights.  When I went to log in to my bank account I received an error code of # 1504.  I called the bank and they reset my password but that didn't work.  Before I deleted the other profiles I was able to log in to the bank's website using the profile that I now have.  I have a HP Pavilion zv running Windows XP.

I'm trying to copy a setup application to a disc.  I downloaded it and saved it to my desktop.  When I move the program to the CD drive to burn it I get a message that there is extra information attached to it that may be lost when I copy the program.  The message also states the contents of the file will not be affected.  Any idea what files will not be copied?  How can I be sure that I get everything I need to set up the application on my friend's pc, who, by the way, doesn't have internet access, otherwise I would download it directly onto his pc.

I did go and purchase an external HD and am planning on backing up everything on a regular basis.  I guess for now I'll just keep pressing F1 to boot Windows and live with that.

Thanks anyway for all your help.  Look on the bright side...I get more experience and confidence in trying to fix my pc instead of being afraid I'm going to break something.

In the meantime I've downloaded an older Flash version for the BIOS.  I went through all 4 older versions and nothing has changed.  I put it back to the most current version.

Well I used the recovery console and ran FIXMBR and FIXBOOT and neither worked.  I still have to press F1 to get Windows to boot up.

I just can't win...I download a recorder and burned the file as an ISO file onto a disc.  I rebooted and the program ran until it got to the user agreement.  I could not click the I Accept button.  I tried everything!!!! but nothing worked.  I had to remove the cd and give up.  I just want to pull my hair out at this point.. I'm still putting off using the recovery console because for some reason or other you don't seem to promote that avenue...any reason?  I'm just curious.

I can't find anything in my bios settings for Quick Boot or Multi-boot.  I also don't have any option to Halt on no errors.  My harddrive is a Toshiba MK4025GAS-(PM).

Nothing else is attached to the laptop when I make changes and boot up.

I disabled the Floppy in the boot order and still nothing changed.  I'm going to get an external hard drive, back up all my files and then when I have the time I'm going to try the Recovery Console and run fixmbr and fixboot.

I don't think there's anything else I can try.

I have loaded the default settings on two separate occasions and still I have to press F1.

I ran checkdisk and it came back clean.

I think my next step will be using the recovery console and running both FIXMBR and FIXBOOT.

I mentioned earlier about my options and you didn't respond.  Considering cost, copying and installation times, which one would be more to my benefit....copy all my info and replace the HDD or copy all my info onto a new pc?  I think one of my main questions is if I reinstall Windows XP on my pc will it fix the problem with the hard drive?  or is the hard drive mechanically no good?

My BIOS utility doesn't show the option for a SMART test so I went onto the HP website and ran the diagnostic tests from there.  Everything passed except I got the same message about an imminent hard drive failure.

I'm not sure whether to purchase an external hard drive and copy all my information, seeing that I don't want to lose any of my programs, and install a new hard drive.....or....should I consider backing up my information anyway, get a new pc, and copy everything back onto the new pc.  Which option makes more sense.  I completely understand you don't want to tell me what to do but if you were in my situation, what would you do?

Also,  I went online and came across the following suggestion:  put in one of the XP cd's (not the recovery CD), go to the recovery console and enter FIXMBR and then try FIXBOOT.  Is that a possiblity?
