[quote name=\'brokSonic\' date=\'Jun 29 2005, 04:39 PM\']I am currently running windows 98 and i feel the need to upgrade. Can i burn my friend's copy of Windows XP and use it on my computer? And if i can, do i need to change the activation key in order for windows xp to work? thanks in advance.

dude, first of all, if you try to upgrade from 98 to any version of xp, your computer will almost certainly feel like its steem driven! (yes, whistle, coal and everything) your best bet is to stick with 98, its a far better os (operatig system), well, if u can have a decent microsoft product, and your computer wont be so slow. if your life has no meaning with out windows Xp in it, then get a new computer to put it on, but almost all machines from the 98 era arent powerful enough to run it.
if you do what to get a new computer with Xp on it, dont chuck the old one, get a router, and network them! this way, they both have acces to the others hard drive, so, for instance, you can do some work on the 98 then save it to the Xp and vice versa, and you can share other resources like printers and internet connections. network setup should be like this:

internet
your DSL router (pluged into phone line)
Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable
network card of each computer.

look at the jpg for a better explanation of this

also, to save some space, you might want to buy a KVM switch. this stands for Keyboard Video & Mouse and lets you use only one keyboard, screen and mouse with the two computers

do gime a bell if u need any more help

Software / Two Virus programmes?
« on: July 28, 2005, 08:58:07 PM »
mostly i have found its only norton that gets upset (thers another post in software where i have a big go at norton incase you are interested btw lol). if you use more than one, especialy those that are made different people, one may find some things that the other didnt pick up on, however having said this, depending on the program, they might scan the system in a way that requires it to be the only antivirus program on the system, so basicaly its down to the individual program; no easy answer sorry...

im afraid this gona be another flippant remark, sorry. y havent you got DSL yet? dont know where u are obviously, but in britain, the cheepest DSL ISP is UK Online, who can give you 512Kbps for GB£9.99/month which is actualy equal to or even cheeper than most dialup contract providers.
Im affraid no1 is bothering with dialup anymore, its so frustraitingly slow and archaic every1 hates it. ask me this question about 5 years ago and there would have been more point. having said that i always keep a dialup ISP on my laptop for "emergencies" lol.
The maxim possable speed on dial up is 56kbps, so it sounds like ur doing quite will as it is dude; what ever speed your connection is, weva its 56kbps or 8mbps, you will NEVER get it all the time (its cheaper for the ISP to run like that)

dude, bit harsh aint it? any way, if you are using win98s "active desktop" stuff, then its trying to put your home page onto your destop, and obviously cant connect to it. fiddle around with your display settings, that should do it. if not, gime a bell

yes, the best way is to follow these simple steps

1 get up and get into your car (print this first obviously)
2 drive to your local computer retailer
3 say to the assistant "i would like to purchase one of your MACINTOSH computers please!"

basicaly, i aggree with SpaceSquad, windows is crap. i meen come on, crap is crap, u cant make anything else out of it other than more crap (except in microsofts case, they take old stale crap, give it a coat of paint, and then all it windows Xp (which, by the way, stands for " - X - perience" as in experience)

well cookies are just text documents that track what u do on the web, they can be useful, like when yahoo use them, but lots of websites use them to track what u do on the web, which is usualy y they get disabled. if you want to endabl them, go through your internet options (tools>internet options>[security tab]>custom level) o btw, where > is means "click this then this" http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

java script can be downladed from java.com, its free and everything, but normaly comes with windows. but microsoft are weird so it dosent alot of the time lol

hope that helps a bit

Software / Norton
« on: July 28, 2005, 08:19:39 PM »
basic summary - NORTON IS EVIL!!! lol, no, seriously, it is, its a crappy program that messes with your hard drive and takes up far too much system resources. i (unfortunatly) have windows computers, which have had norton goback on them, untill one day i installed a network card on one of them, and lovely norton decided to change the file structure of the entire disk!!!! my m8 and i looked into it, and we concluded that, because norton has such a presance on a HDD, that it would be unsafe to simply uninstall it, and that the safest option would be to format the entire disk.

ALTERNAT PROGRAMS

for spyware, use the best, webroot finds bloody everything (if you use bear share it will get rid of "save.exe" for you which is nice)

for viruses i use AVG free, but thers loads to choose from FOR FREE on www.download.com

basicaly, norton is like the McDonalds of software; pretends its brilliant, but its actualy full of Octopus brains

sorry, but i realy dont like xp in the first place, so you wont get a particularly "microsoft flatering" answer from me lol

sounds like something in your registry is fubard, and the easiest way is prob gona b to do another format, then go sue microsoft for being such idiots (well, that last bit is just what i would like to do it, but if you want to pay my legal fees im quite happy to tag along lol)

dont blame your computer, its just doing what it thinks ur telling it to. microsoft are the idiots who need to learn to program lol. i meen, if you were installing windows, it shouldnt even let you out of setup without creating at least one accout...

you want the best solution to this problem? buy a mac! LOL! (i did warn you at the start lol sorry)

Software / disk defrag
« on: July 28, 2005, 07:59:10 PM »
yes, i agree, good computer mainanence is very important if you want it to last for a long time, however i think that the cause of the "users not having to log into password protected programs" was probably not purely a fragmented HDD problem; the drive was probably also verrry squify, so probably so was the program lol, but i dont know....

here are SLs top tips for brilliant computer maintance

1 have two hard drives - have a small-ish hard drive for all your windows stuf, say about 30 or something, then a mahusive one for all your work (i have found 400 gig IDE HDDs on www.misco.co.uk for around GB£150). this way, if anything goes wrong with your windows stuf, you can just simply wipe that hard drive without worrying about all of your documents etc

2 maintain your hard drives - hard drives work by making errors. sounds very daft but they do. these are almost all correctable errors that it knows about an will fix later. a hard drive will go 'squify' (i mentioned that earlier) when the number of errors it is creating out numbers the number it can fix again. it makes these errors because its faster and easier, alot like if you had been given 10 maths sums to do, and the teacher said that they needed tobe done as soon as possable; you would probably make mistakes, but youd know youd be able to correct them when she handed them back to you. go to www.grc.com to see what he has done for hard drive maintainance; its a brilliant program.

3 keep it healthy - make sure you do run things like defragmentation programs, antivirus programs, antispyware programs and so on, they realy do help. if u dont, its alot like smoking is for people, they go along fine for ages, then one day they get heart disease (sorry to compare it to something so depressing). microsoft programs such as "scandisk" and "defrag" work up to a point, then say "sorry, i just cant be bothered any more" and stop. there are better ones available on the net that dont stop untill the job is done, such as the one you can buy at www.grc.com (thats btilliant btw, but didnt i already say that?)

4 backup - *ALWAYS* backup important stuff; your computer might get run over by a big red london bus on the way back from harrods, you never know, (would you be able to see a 1 foot tall box if it crossed the road infront of you?) so always keep copies of what you keep on it, AND KEEP THEM SOMEWHERE SAFE (CD-Rs are usualy the best, although they are quite small in storage space, the data on them can usualy be quite easy to recover if something like a flood hits, plus they dont get damaged by electromagnetec interferience)

this one is optional, but i like to do it anyway

5 format your computer every year - if you wipe the hard drives every so often, it gives them a clean slate to work from, so any spyware or viruses that your scanners might have missed will be gone and thus will no longer be calling home to say "look what i have found on this computer!". having said that, dont do that daft thing and format all of your lovely data away too, that realy would be stupid.

very long i know, and probably quite boring, lol, but if you got this far, ur as bigger geek as i am, so thats not too bad!!! LOL! (dw, being a geek is gd, means ur gd at sumfin) well at least now you know a little more about the workings of your computer!

hope that was useful, and not too boring! gime a shout if u want ne more help

Software / XP and 2k network problem
« on: July 28, 2005, 07:26:23 PM »
well appart from the fact that all of the windows versions have been meen lol...

id say check all your configurations; because xp is obviously newer, it can take more information; for instance, if your compters name is longer than the 8 characters that win98 can handle, it will jus say "computer says no" (little britain, BBC3)
the other problem it could be is IP broadcasting (DHCP). if your wireless router isnt sending out IP addresses, then the computers wont like that either
Basicaly, wireless networking is always a bit fiddely, so u just need to work at it till the stupid thing works lol

hope that helps a bit

« on: July 28, 2005, 07:19:37 PM »
lol yes as "i_and_identity" said, format the hard drive, but it sounds like ud have trouble doing that? dont meen to be rude or patronise u or anything of corse, sorry if it came over like that, im a nice guy realy lol

to format ur puter using Xp, boot the computer up with the Xp CD in the drive, then select "boot from CD" when it asks you to choose between the hard drive and the CD. this should take you into windows setup. its prety self explanitary from here on, just you might need to delete partitions. dont worry about this, it jus means that its gona wipe them clean for you, then it will put windows back on it

jus one question, y didnt you buy a mac? lol, as you will see from virtualy all of my other posts, im quite anit-microsoft lol

hope that helped a bit

im affraid you will have to excuse my flipancy but im affraid i couldnt think of any better way to say this sorry lol

the ways i know are....

1 hack it till u get it
2 install 97
3 say to ur self "stuff it, microsoft are crap" and buy a mac instead

sorry again, probably no help at all, but i shall say one thing that might be a little helpful; i always teach my students that the best way to learn about their computer is to fiddle (which is actualy what a true hacker does lol (true hacking is not malitious, it is fiddling with computers to make them do cool stuf) ). a person needs a very advanced knowlage of programing to be able to literaly blow up their computer, so untill then, thers no danger!

hope the last bit at least was a bit useful
