There\'s never a best , because there\'s always better . Depends why you need it , what do you want to protect .
There will always be people getting around your firewall  . There are firewalls for every purse from freeware to very expensive firewalls for business purposes . The best firewall for you will be the firewall that you use a certain time and gives you satifaction because it doesn\'t interfere to much with other applications or fits best with your OS , or shows you it stopped some people getting nosy or wanting to put a trojan on your computer .

I agree with rdc above,

But if you really want a good firewall i have always trusted hardware based firewalls such as a router or gateway. Another good option that i have heard of muyltiple times is to grab an old system, put linux or unix on there with two nics and turn that into your gateway.

The above post is best..use a old computer.

Then run OpenBSD...you would pretty well off.

I wont discus , the quality of using a linux computer for a firewall (probably a good idea), but do you really know, a guy asking for the best firewall knows something about linux .
And even  if he knows something about linux doesn\'t mean he necessary  knows how to setup a linux computer as a firewall .Take it from  me there\'s never a best , there\'s always better , and all this depends on the client ,on what he wants ,  can afford , or can handle . At least in my humble opinion .
