Computer rebooting and can't find Windows
« on: November 18, 2004, 10:09:59 PM »
Hello,
I was trying to get rid of some very bad trojans on my computer using Norton, AVG, Spybot, and Spyhunter, and read somewhere that I should turn off system restore and use the msconfig feature to run in safe mode.  when I rebooted, it began by looing for the boot record (my computer has 3 placed to boot from.  1st is set as Floppy, 2nd-IDE-0 and 3rd CD-Rom.  Then, it goes to a 'sorry for the inconvience, but windows failed to run properly.  Please select from either safe mode, safe mood with networking, run before error or run windows normally.

Each time I click any tab, all it does is slow the Windows XP logo like normal, then goes directly to rebooting all over again, back to the screen that says, 'windows could not run properly.'  Did I do something bad by turning off system restore and can anyone please help me? http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

Did you try also to run Ad-aware on your system?
If you did, what version was it?
I only ask this, because running Ad-Aware6 which was not updated could have a bad side effect on removal of a certain registry entry
This does not sound like your problem, I'm just enquiring.

Do you have your XP CD?

You could try to fix the master boot record, but if a virus has infected you, your only option may be a clean install, if you try this method...

Have you tried a Repair?
