Windows SP2 has knackered my PC
« on: October 13, 2004, 11:25:57 AM »
Hullo there people,

I was wondering if any of you could help me with a major problem I have. I eventually got around to installing Windows SP2 on Saturday night (fool that I am!) Once it had downloaded I was asked to restart my PC, which I did. My PC shut down, started powering up again, the Windows XP logo appeared on my monitor and then.........it restarted itself again, and again, and again. (That's enough restarts for now). I've checked the MS knowledge bases and the only reference I can find is http://support.microsoft.com/defaul...ct=windowsxpsp2 which is not relevant to me.

I've tried to start my PC in safe mode and also go back to the last good configuration but this fails to do any good and the damned computer will just restart again.

The only thing I can think of which may be affecting my computer is that I ran Ad-aware earlier on in the day and it located something which it couldn't remove at the time and asked whether it should remove it when I next restarted my PC (which just happened to be the SP2 restart).

I'd be grateful if someone could advise me what to do as I am now at a loss.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

my only suggestion would be attempt a repair - do you have an original WinXP OS install disk?  There's no guarantee this will work, but as you're nearly faced with a complete re-install, it might be worth a try.  Also are you running a third party firewall - go into Safe and uninstall it and try reboot.

Check your BIOS is set to boot from CD drive first and make sure Win XP disk in drive.  Reboot and hit any key when asked to boot from CD-ROM.  Let Windows  load all install files and select Install Windows <ENTER>.  Dont select the Recovery Console option.  The Setup should then detect the old installation and will offer an attempt a repair option <R>.  If select this Setup will try to re-instate WinXP as it was with older files.

It might not work too well, but its worth a shot - might give you enough of an OS to actually get a boot and copy off your docs.  Sometimes it works perfectly.

Sp2 has issues with some motherboards = Aopen AX4SG, Shuttle SB6IG2, Asus P4P800-E dlx, Abit IS7-V when combined with Prescott CPUs. BIOS update may fix.

Cant think of anything else... maybe this will inspire others to chip in!

Link should show you how to recover from this
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...=windowsxpsp2kb

Post back if you need a hand removing viruses or spyware
It should then be safe to reinstall sp2
