Slipstream SP2 CD
« on: October 16, 2004, 07:57:23 PM »
Is there a way to install SP2 from a slipstreamed cd without reinstalling? I have a SP2 slipstremed cd but I already have a XP installation with no issues. Is the best way, to do a repair installation or just download the SP2 by itself "without doing a complete reinstall again?"

Here's the instructions for slipstreaming Service Pack 2
http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/winx...sp2-bootcd.html

But that's not your problem, I really have no idea, hmmmm
I wonder if others know
The Full Network Install is 266 mb as you can see from the link

The home users updating online will get the 90 mb version
or they can order the CD from Microsoft

I've installed SP2 online on my machine and a few other machines for friends and family without problems

Here's my procedure if you decide to go this route, on broadband connection this could take up to 35 minutes, don't stop it even it appears to freeze
If your on dialup, order the CD from Bill Gates

Backup important files or folders before you visit just to be safe

Do an Online Virus scan at either
Housecall's--Set to Autoclean
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
and/or
Panda's
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/co...n_principal.htm
This will help to ensure you are virus free, even if you have AV protection

==Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version or later
After installation-CHECK FOR UPDATES
Do a Full system scan----Remove All Critical objects
RESTART your computer to finish the cleaning process
You should do this anyways, it's a great spyware remover
This will help to ensure that you are spyware free, Microsoft recommends you are Spyware and virus  free before installing SP2
If you have Spybot installed on your Computer, you should disable TEA TIMER if it's enabled

===Do a DiskCleanup>>START----Run---type in cleanmgr and hit Enter
Ensure that Temp and Temporary Internet Files are checked

===Defragment your Hard Drive
START---All Programs---Accessories---System Tools--Disk Defragmenter

===Create a System Restore Point
START---ALL PROGRAMS--Accessories--System Tools--System Restore

===Enable XP's Firewall thru Network Connections in Control Panel
Right click on your connection--Properties--Advanced tab
Disable your  AV  protection completely and possibly any third party installed software firewall from running on startup---eg. ZoneAlarm

RESTART your computer to ensure your AV and any third party firewall are totally disabled

Visit Window's Updates and Download and Install Service Pack 2

After Installation and you have RESTARTED your computer
Go Back and Disable the XP Firewall and Enable any third party Firewall(if so required)
and Anti-Virus on Startup

==Empty your Prefetch folder, this will ensure that Windows doesn't waste time looking for old files on startup
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch <--delete the Whole contents, but Don't delete Prefetch

RESTART your computer one more time to ensure your AV and Firewall are enabled
If you have any problems with any programs later, ensure you visit the respective sites and look for any program updates, including your AV....
