Win2K - is there another option than Norton?
« on: July 12, 2001, 03:53:56 PM »
I use Norton 2001 on this system, but I don\'t understand how it works. I wonder if it works at all.

If I scan with the \"Fix Errors\" check box OFF, then it always tells me things are fine and everything checked out.

If I scan with it turned ON, then it complains that it will have to \"schedule a repair\" after a reboot. When the reboot occurs, chkdisk runs, finds nothing, and I\'m back in 2K. And if I run Norton again, it shows the same message! It looks like it does nothing after all.

Is everything fine, is Norton working, and is there a better way to check out a disk problem?

What it sounds like, is Norton is only using the built-in checkdsk software win2k comes with.  If you run it with no options, then it does a read-only check (it can\'t fix errors on the drive if it can\'t \"lock\" it).  If you want to do a full check (ie fix any errors it may find), then it\'ll ask you to let it run the next time windows boots (so it can have full access to the drive).
