Desktop replaced by html
« on: December 31, 2004, 01:22:01 PM »
Need help in a big way.

My Windows XP Desktop was recently replaced by an html screen that I can't get rid of.  It states "secure yourself now" and includes a link labeled "remove instructions" that redirects you to a web site advertisement that tells you to buy their product to get rid of it.  Prior to this installing and periodically I also get a virus alert through my McAffee antivirus that states that it has detected and cleaned StartPage-DU trojan and clean it.

Here is my Hijack this log:

Thanks in advance.

Jim

We should be able to get you clean

I need you to do a couple of things first, because it's New Year's Eve I may not see your response until tomorrow
Do as much of this as you can before posting back

Please update your version of Hijackthis to 1.99
Important: Create a Permanent folder for Hijackthis
Double Click "MY Computer"
Open your C: drive
Click "File" >>> "New" >>>> "Folder"
A new folder will be created, name it HJT

Now you will have C:\HJT

Download Hijackthis from This Link--CLICK HERE or This Link--CLICK HERE
Save it to that new folder

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the contents of the Quote box to notepad
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as search.reg
This will help to restore your default searchhooks

Quote
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix]@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad) hit Enter
Copy the contents of the Quote box to notepad
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as removetrust.reg
This will help to remove the 015 entries in your log

Quote
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains][-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains]

Save this file on the desktop, well need this later, don't run it yet

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Please go to this link
Give it time to load
http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org/
Use the Browse button and navigate to this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intronsad.exe <--file
Right click on it and select it and then use the Submit button

Print this out or save it to a Notepad file on your desktop for easy access, Disconnect from the Internet, I will also need you to Restart into Safe mode

After you have the newer version of Hijackthis

Follow the advice from the link or simply keep tapping the F8 key on the keyboard as  the system is booting up

Navigate to this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\intronsad.exe <--file
If found as malware by the online file scan delete it
If unknow, could you just right click on it, left click properties and let me know date created, and info that may be relevant under the version tab

Could you also take a look for these files
Do a search for the bolded files and delete them if they exist
one "desktop.html" may also be in your Web folder
• %Windows%\desktop.html
• %Windows%\SSICO.ICO
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url

Open up CleanUp! and click the CleanUp button
Let it finish scanning for files, when it's complete it will prompt you to Log off and back on again.... Don't do it at this time

Stay in safemode and open Ad-Aware
Perform a Full system scan
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

RESTART your computer back to Normal Mode

Could you also Download and save to desktop
DLLCompare
Click the Compare button to start the next process. This will take a bit longer.
The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist'.
Files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'.
Very few files should be listed in the lower pane,if any, when the Compare scan is complete.
Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button

Post back a fresh Hijackthis log from version 1.99
and the log from DLLCompare
We'll try and get the leftovers after that

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Happy New Year,

Thanks for the timely response.  I Went through all the steps as instructed.  The desktop is now a white screen that I can't change.   I'm now having attempts of a home page hijacker attempting to reset my home page to about:blank.  Here is the latest HJT post and DLL compare log.

I Also found other files of concern, but I'm not sure if they're related to the intronsad.exe.  I ran them though the malware scan and this is the result that I got:  "The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file".  The other file of interest is:  intron.exe.  Not sure what it is, but I got the same response when ran through the malware scan.

Try and delete both those files you ran through the online malware scan

I don't see a hidden installer for about:blank, but just to be on the safe side
Download and save to desktop this Removal Tool developed by Symantec
Don't run it yet

Also download and save to Desktop
The Standalone version of CWShredder.exe
Again, don't run it yet

Restart your computer into safe mode
and delete these files also if found, there posted at the top of Symantec's link

Symantec's
If you do a search for your hosts file
Don't delete
127.0.0.1 localhost

But anything below it can be removed if it wasn't purposely set by you or a legit program

Stay in safe mode
Find and delete these files also if it exists
C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd32.exe <--file, careful with the spelling
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dba.dll
Also follow the instructions from Symantecs to remove other entries in your registry
Kwbot worm

Again in safe mode
Run Cleanup again
Don't log off and on yet, instead

As you can see the O15 trusted IP ranges, didn't go away.  I also noticed that under the system processes there are several svchost.exe files running.  When I display system processes and sort by mem usage one of these is using a lot of memory when it's running.  That wasn't there before all this happened and I was wondering if its related.

Symantec Backdoor.Agent.B Removal Tool 1.0.1.2

C:\System Volume Information: (not scanned)
G:\System Volume Information: (not scanned)
Backdoor.Agent.B has not been found on your computer.

Here is the post from the FxAgentB.log.  As you can see it says  that C:\ was not scanned, but I can assure you it did scan as it took several hours to complete.

Also, the computer seems to be taking a while to boot initially.  It locks up right after boot up and becomes unrepsonsive for a couple of minutes and then becomes responsive again.

The about:blank hijacker has stopped!

I've also noticed that my McAffee Securtiy Center Icon in my system tray turns black (Off) right after boot up.  When I click on it it shows firewall not running which is contrary to my settings.  I then have to go back in and start it manually or wait a few minutes.

Any Ideas??

Jim

Any Ideas??

Jim

One step at a time
I do notice your running McAfee's  and  Norton's on startup
This may cause conflicts having more than one AV running on startup

It may take a little longer to bootup after running Windows CleanUp!
This is also cleaning your Prefetch folder
But the speed should increase after a couple bootups
It won't cause it to lock up however <<EDIT
In the future, after your clean you can use Cleanup
But open the Options and uncheck Prefetch
Use that option once every couple of months

Let's try this again, here are some instructions from Trend Micros
# Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
# In the left panel, expand(+) the following
+HKEY_CURRENT_USER
+Software
+Microsoft
+Internet Explorer
+Desktop
+Components
# Still in the left panel, locate and Right click on and delete the subkey:
0
# Close Registry Editor.

Using Windows Explorer, locate and delete the following files:
Do a search for the bolded files
• %Windows%\desktop.html >>you may also find and entry in your Web folder
• %Windows%\SSICO.ICO
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url
• %Root%\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url

Could you also look in your C:\Windows\Web folder
Let me know if you find any .html files in there that may be related

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O15 - Trusted IP range: 67.19.185.246
O15 - Trusted IP range: 67.19.185.246 (HKLM)

If you don't use Stopzilla anymore, please fix this one too
O2 - BHO: STOPzilla Browser Helper Object - {E3215F20-3212-11D6-9F8B-00D0B743919D} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\SZIEBHO.dll

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
YES and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your computer

Once back in windows
Download DelDomains.inf
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

once downloaded right-click on DelDomains.inf and select: Install
This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges"

Post a fresh hijackthis log

Before posting back ensure to go to
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Open Display Properties.
3. Click the Desktop tab.
4. Click the Customize Desktop button.
5. Click the Web tab in the Desktop Items window.
6. Make sure all checkboxes in this window are un-checked.

Also--if the White screen is still there
Go to Control Panel>>Display Properties>>Desktop>>Try changing the Background

Having more than one svchost is normal, Don't know why it would be using so much
Resources
Could you download Process Explorer by SysInternals
Unzip the Contents to it's own folder
open the Folder and Double click to run Process viewer
In the next window click on File>>Save as
Save the file to the desktop
Copy and paste that info back here

Adding one more thing Jim after you have done the above, but before posting back a Fresh hijackthis log
Could you download remv3.zip <<Removed link
Unzip the contents to a folder

That link you will have to right click on and Copy Shortcut
Paste it to the IE address bar and hit Go
for it to work properly

Reboot into Safe mode

Look for these files and delete them if they exist
C:\WINDOWS\System32\TGBRFV_.exe<-----this file
C:\Windows\System32\TGBRFV_5.dll <--file
the exact file names

Please run remv3.bat in safe mode
Reboot back to Normal mode
remv3.bat should of made a log
 c:\log.txt
Can you post this log too, thanks
This is when you can scan again with Hijackthis and post a new log

Open Process viewer and double click on this process
syshost.exe  under the image tab it should give you the path to the file

Do a search on your computer for this file
syshost.exe
Notice the spelling
The svchost.exe are normal

It may be in your
C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder or   C:\Windows folder
But do a search for it

If you find it please go to this site
Give the link time to load
http://virusscan.jotti.dhs.org/
Use the browse button to navigate to the file
Then right click on it and and Select it
Use the Submit button and let it finish scanning the file
Post back the scanner results back here
Sorry Jim, I know I posted the instructions how to run a scan with the Online Malware scan, it just my copied and pasted canned speech  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\';)\' />

Could you also Download and save to desktop ServiceFilter.zip
A script by rand1038 that reveals potential unauthorised running services in your system.
Unzip the contents to a folder
Double-click ServiceFilter.vbs, if you get a prompt from your Anti-Virus, Allow this to run, we are just collecting information
This script will create a text file named 'Post_This.txt' in the same folder as the script itself has been saved - copy and paste the contents of Post_This.txt in your next reply here.
