Laptop Help

Hello-
I could use some help.
I recently bought a refurbished laptop for my sister.  The laptop I got was a cheap laptop with all minimum base stuff...Its a compaq 5300 LTE laptop with Win 98, 32MB RAM, 133MHz processor, CD-rom/floppy drive, 1.2 GB HDD, sound card, 56k modem, AC adapter, battery, etc.

The problem she is having is that some CDRom games will play on it and other games will not.  Most of the simple CDRom games, Hasbro type stuff (yahtzee, boggle, etc) all play just fine, but the EA sports games (basketball, baseball) and other games like microsoft golf won\'t play at all...

What steps can I take to make some of these games play for her?  I guess she can spend the time to DL new drivers for her current existing video/sound cards she has in her laptop.  Will this help?  Would DL\'ing and installing Microsoft Direct X 8.0 help at all?  If getting new drivers for her current cards won\'t work, can she go out and buy new video/sound cards for her laptop, and if so, what ones should she get to ensure that the games will work? how much would she expect to pay? and how easy are they to install yourself?

or possibly could it be a factor that she just doesn\'t have enough RAM?

I am guessing it is a sound/video card problem because some of the games that did not work either played some video or some sound, but not both together.  Some games caused invalid protection faults.  Some games weren\'t even recognized by the CD rom drive. And again, some games worked just fine.

Help! We are clueless.

thanks,
BTW this is a great site.

The Drivers would be an excellent start.
Check the CD\'s for dirt or scratches.

You will probabley find from my experiance that Pc Clinics charge £80 just to open the dam thing http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':(\' />

So to be cost effective, Download the Drivers, Check the CD\'s for scratches or Dirt or smudges.

Do the disks that work have Auto Run, ( Do they start with out any intervention?)

As to installing new hardware for a Laptop What is your own level of experience ? Can you do it with a Pc ?
You could be letting yourself into a lot of trouble?

If you can write down the sys requirements for the disks that are working and see if a pattern begins to form ?

You might now be really finding out why the Lap top was for sale ?

Hope it helps !!

Hi
Go here for drivers and info: http://www.compaq.com/support/portables/ou...on/LTE5000.html

Generally you can\'t change graphics or sound boards in laptops.
Extra RAM helps speed alot but it may also be quite expensive as this laptop has not been in production for some time. My guess is that the required memory boards are no longer in production, this usually has er.. negative effects on the price.
