Help With Topantispyware, please!
« on: March 17, 2005, 08:54:49 AM »
I've followed the posts by a few users on how to remove the desktop background that takes over, and the small yellow triangle in the toolbar that appears when topantispyware gets onto a system, but the detailed instructions for their scans using Hijack This don't match up with any files I have.  I've tried using the suggested solutions as they apply, but again the specific files referenced for removal are not in my WINNT or Windows folders.

Can anyone help with recommendations to get rid of this thing?

I've changed the Folder option from "Enable Web Content On My Desktop" to "Use Windows classic desktop", and can then run Windows 2000 with a blue background, but if I try to change the background, I get a flasing background, and when I try to restart windows, it gets me to the login window and then freezes up just after that so I have to go back in Safe mode and reset the folder options.

It looks like there are people on this forum who have been very helpful in helping other remove this, so I'm hoping that someone will be able to make some specific recommendations.

Below is my Hijack This scan.  If there is any other clutter that can be removed, please advise as well.

In advance, thanks for any help that can be offered.

« Reply #1 on: March 17, 2005, 10:56:26 PM »
Download and Install the free version of Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05
Ensure you have this version or the paid version
Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
When Installing it may download and start running a scan
Allow to update, but Don't run a scan yet

Please print this out or save to a Notepad file on the desktop

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
* Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Important>>Restart your computer into safe mode
you can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is booting up

Find and delete these files or folders if they exist, exact file names
C:\WINNT\System32\spoolsrv32.exe <-file, Exact spelling

Look for these next ones too, delete files in bold if found
Let me know if you find any of them
•C:\WINNT\desktop.html '
-C:\WINNT\Web\desktop.html

•C:\WINNT\SSICO.ICO
•C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Desktop\! Protect Your Data.url
•C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Favorites\! Smart Security.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Recent\! Smart Security.url
• C:\Documents and Settings\<current user>\Start Menu\! Secure Yourself.url

Go to START>>RUN>>Type in
%temp%
Hit OK
In new Window select EDIT>>Select All
Delete the selected

Go to Control Panel>Internet Options
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content

In the Control Panel > Display.
Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button.
Click on the "Web" tab.
Uncheck everything

Stay in safe mode
Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINNT\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINNT\System32\spoolsrv32.exe

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/15788fed270af7...ip/RdxIE601.cab

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows, including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Open Ad-Aware
Perform a Full system scan
When it's finished scanning
At this point you should either right click on the screen and and choose the "Select All" Objects option or individually put a checkmark in each objects checkbox
click on the Next button. Ad-Aware SE will now present you with a confirmation box as to whether or not you would like to remove the objects you have just selected. Press the "OK" button

Restart back into Normal mode, log in with account having desktop issues
If still having problems
Again  check the Display settings
Go to Control Panel > Display.
Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button.
Click on the "Web" tab.
Uncheck everything

Log off and back on again

Post back with a fresh Hijackthis log afterwards

Help With Topantispyware, please!
« Reply #3 on: March 18, 2005, 09:16:16 PM »
Hi again dbanfi_cci

If everything is running better

You should set up protection against future attacks

SpywareBlaster by JavaCool---will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies
Install---Check for Updates---Enable all protection
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

IE-Spyad---IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
Here is a tutorial and download link
TUTORIAL==Link to Tutorial
Download link

With both, Check for updates every couple of weeks
Keep the link to IE-Spyad bookmarked so you can check for updates
SpywareBlaster, after every update just simply enable all protection

Also, very important, you are way behind on Windows Updates
This is one of the most important prevental tools in keeping your system secure
You should visit Windows updates
and Install all Latest Service Packs and Critical updates
Service pack 4 for Windows 2000 has been out for quite some time now

Keep revisiting Windows updates and restarting your computer when prompted until you have them all
Don't install Recommended updates unless they are something you desire

Stay safe  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
