Zone Alarm Possible Hack

I have a big problem right...now...

Help need some ideas and help to fix this...

My Zone Alarm Pro Firewall cannot find or hit the Zone Labs update server...to validate it has latest build...

Zone Alarm is running but can't seem to hit update servers.

Also I noticed Any "ZoneLabs.com" url entries end-up as Http:\\ Bad request 400 errors...and blank screen....

but "Zone Alarm.com" entries work.

Any attempts to tech support pages are blocked..or blank page

WINXP OS, SP2
I have Norton Anit virus with lastest updates...no-virus...
Ran V scans from Micro Trend...no virus...
Ran V scans from Computer Associates...no virus...
Ran V scans from Kaperski...no Virus...I ran the scan one Zonelabs executable from and client from Kaperski web site.

I checked my hosts file...only entry is loop back 127.0.0.1...and is locked...

I run Ad-Aware Pro Anti-Spyware and  Microsoft Anti-Spyware...neither program finds anything...

I am not sure if I am having a DNS problem because I can hit just about any web site except Zone Labs. com ...related url links

All I can think of is a DOS attack against Zone Labs

I see you may be using the below firewalls

Nortons Firewall
Are you also using Windows XP built in firewall?

You don't need more than one Firewall running, this can cause problems
and conflicts, try disabling the other 2 first and just leave Zone Alarms firewall running

Nice thought but no!...regarding my config.

Norton is strictly AV...no Firewall!

and Microsoft Firewall is disabled...!

Zone Alarm Pro...has a button to disable Microsoft Firewall for the reason you described...and recommends to disable MS Firewall.

...so no issue there...

I do have a router that has a firewall but it it disabled and I am not blocking any ports...

I have to tell you this PO's me to the extreme as I have been working on trying to findout why the auto download wasn't working and the restriction http:\\ 400 Bad request...to most all  "ZONELABS" pages not  "ZONEALARM" and the fact that their links to tech support email pages etc. where disbaled too...over the past 24-48 hours.

it set me in a bit of a panic...thinking my firwall had be compromised and or at least the update componant auto and manula was compromised and or redirecting or hijacking the update process and componant to a spoofed web site...

I have spent the past 48 hours scouring logs from my firewall past an present as well as anti-spyware logs...including HJT logs looking for a footprint of an unknown  viri or spyware...

I had trend Micro Scan, Kaperski Scan, CA Assocites...and multiple anti-spy engines scan my systems 3-4 times ...not to mention the threads I sent in here...

I even restored to a previous drive build as a last ditch effor to solve the problem...but it did not...which made me believe it was either an new undected threat or a DOS attack on Zone Labs

I thought I was a victim of a new blended threat previously not know to any major FW or AV vendor...as new blended and hidden attacks happen everyday...some going undected.

I am so P.O'ed at Zone Labs right know...for not annoucing a maintenance window...no email no nothiung..not even a redirect to a maintanance page until late today!

What crappy customer service and just plan bad manners to their paying customer base...

I am flaming mad hot!  I take my security serious!

and these jokers sent me into an alarm state...with no warning...I looked in blogs and googled it looking for word...of any kind!...and nothing!!!

...so a sent them an email to customer service and told them if I had treated my customers the way they treated me ...no notifcation in 24-48 hrs I wouldn't have any customers...especially if it is a pre-scheduled pre-determined maint. window.

...most folks don't know how much crap in the way of threats from viri, spy and malware are floating around... out there...then again maybe they do...


Most  new viri being written and spyware are going to be undectable even according to Microsoft...as they will target embedding themselves inside the OS kernel below the radar of many anti-spyware and viri dection engines...as they will become part of the OS...not plugged into the OS as an external process...like today.

This has not presented itself as a mjor problem today...but Microsoft is very concerned about it...and has stated so publicly.

Virtual Desktops the answer? don't know?

...but which is why I run a virtual desktop when accessing the internet as another layer of protection...when I am done it resets everything back to its orginal state...Notron calls their home version..."SafeTry"...

What I don't know is how well this protects against a runtime viri or spyware threat...and if the attack is successfull whether or not the "virtual desktop" is full aware of all changes made and able to disregard or wipe completely all viri componants, malware, and spyware...however, it is better than not running a virtual desktop...and I would recommend to anyone that they add this as a practice especially if they trod in uncharted waters where the pirates hang out.


Further, when accessing the internet, you should be running an SSL client llike ANONmizer to encrypt traffic between yourself and the public internet...this also helps with various threats.

The ANON SSL server is my gateway to the internet ..so to speak..

many people don't know but corporate america is running loads of proxyware like (BLUECOAT) to scan content and block or redirect traffic...even to federal and state authorities...not to mention what Patriot Act...people can do.

...so the days of downloading MP3's or other content from illicits sites is almost at an end.

...the point being is that everything is being scanned...ISP's and carriers especially love the proxyware and content scanning and filtering though they are afraid of legal issues; however,  the Patriot Act gets them off the hook or absolves them of any malice...for violating Privacy laws...becasue all that anyone has to do or say is I suspect that X person is a terrorist and you become a victim of the Patriot Act.

...so how do I know this or is this just paranoia...no!

I work for a major carrier...and sit in meetings where all this stuff is seriously discussed.

..no they don't key on the word "bomb" or "terrorist" ...but they look at phrases and patterns and then determine risk level...and if you trigger trip a content profile then they can zoom in and target you.
