XP/2000 Start Menu/Desktop Settings Consistency
« on: September 17, 2001, 12:46:33 PM »
I\'m new to Windows XP / 2K administration, and I was wondering how i could go about doing the following on my home computer.  Using Windows XP, I have set up several user accounts including my own Admin account, but i would like it that when I install a program, Windows automatically places that program\'s program group and any icons on the desktop it may create into every users desktop and start menu rather than just the user who installed it.   I tried looking around in the control panel options and such for anything about how to do this, but so far I haven\'t found anything.  Hopefully one of you guys has some info about any settings I need to change in order to accompolish this.  Thanks in advance....

Just off the top of my head, it\'s supposed to be the install application\'s responsibility to do that.  Usually if a program isn\'t multi-user capable, it just installs icons in the default directory (All Users).  If it is multi-user capable, it\'ll ask if you want to create icons for just the current user, or all users.

So I guess the short answer is I don\'t know.  The software install itself should be asking you which you want.

Sounds like you have a point.  Now that i think about it, OfficeXP did install to all users, but AOL Instant Messenger didn\'t.  Makes sense...Thanks.
