Slow Gateway 1500
« on: September 29, 2005, 09:32:45 AM »
I have a Gateway 1500 with:

1.4 G P4
256 RAM (I know, will upgrade)
Windows Xp Pro
120 GB Seagate Drive(Defraged)

I had to reformat the drive due to a currupt data. Ever since, it has been extreamly slow. Not comparaible to a couple of days ago.
Has all basic security measures
Notorn Pro 2004 (All up to date)
Zonealarm
Ad-Aware
Spy-bot

I'v scanned everything at least 15 times and no difference in preformence was noticed. I'd expect better from this thing. Can anyone help? Thanks. I'll post a HJT log as soon as I download the software.

Jon

I don't see nothing malicious
More ram would sure help
Norton's can be a resource hog,
I'm not sure about ZoneAlarm
I use Sygates'
Remember to disable XP's firewall if running a third party software firewall

Have you checked what services are running?
Keep note of anything changed
I would link you to black viper's site but it is down I think
Here's an alternate link

Look under the Safe configuration and go from there

Thanks, that helped a bunch.

But what could of caused this slowness, if I may ask. I mean, before, I had numerous programs running with little problems, now it freezes for short periods of time. I will soon upgrade ram.

I assume you have all latest drivers for video and such

Don't get them from Windows updates, get them from the manufacturer
If you open task manager, what's the System idle process at?
If low, what's using CPU?

Keep your task manager open, when you experience a slowdown
What is using the resources?

Have you always had Norton's installed?
Have you alway had zone alarm installed?

Did you do a clean install?

Have you considered partioning your hard drive?

Yes I have.

It slows down when using Spy-Bot or Ad-Aware, you know, those kinds of apps. Yes I always had Norton and Zonealarm installed. And yes, I did do clean install, I have tried the partition idea, but it really didn't make a difference. Thanks

Ahh, that explains it, when running Spybot and/or ad-aware you will see a noticeable increase on CPU usage in your task manager
It can spike quite high actually, that's normal
It will also increase Memory usage while being run
Nothing out of the ordinary
I would still stick another 256 mb of RAM in however, this should generally increase performance on the machine
