Blue Screen
« on: October 04, 2005, 10:39:52 AM »
While surfing online, the screen of the desktop all of a sudden turned plain red and a black window popped up, saying that my PC got hijacked and that I'd need to download some anti-spyware tool. I didn't do that, since the whole thing looked anything but trustworthy to me. I ran AdAware (detected and deleted quite a bit) and Spybot (detected a lot less, but also a fair amount). While being online again to get some more information about what's going on (because the desktop was still being red), I had that ultimate computer freeze, and I could no longer move the mouse nor use the keyboard. The only way to shut down the system was by using the power button.

Ever since then, the system has no longer been booting in Normal Mode, but in Safe Mode only. The HijackThis log looks perfectly clean to me, though. However, whenever I try to boot in Normal Mode, a blue screen comes up for one second only, yet I took a picture of it, so I can inform you about what it says. After this blue-screen second, the system restarts automatically, leading to that black screen one gets whenever pressing F8, offering the option to boot in Safe Mode.

That blue screen says that Windows got shut down, so the PC doesn't get damaged:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

It also says that it might be a software installation problem, and that I should restart it in Safe Mode to uninstall hardware or software, in case that I have to. Also, I should deactivate BIOS options, such as caching or shadowing.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x00000050 (0x82222338, 0x00000000, 0x804E5283, 0x00000000)

And the advice to contact the system administrator or technical support isn't quite helpful either, but well, in a way I'm doing that, since I'm contacting you guys.

I really hope anyone here can tell me what next steps would need to be taken. Unfortunately, I can't provide you with another HijackThis log, because my printer is no longer being recognized either and I can't type up the entire log, as this would obviously take me forever. But as I said, the log looks entirely clean to me, since I compared it to a log I ran when the PC was working perfectly fine. I'd appreciate a soon response and thank you very much.

I just signed up and hopefully, I'm now going to receive a reaction to the situation described above. Also, here is my current HijackThis log I got while in Safe Mode, since that blue screen described in the previous posting comes up for one second instead, whenever I try to boot in Normal Mode:

I'd be really thankful for any advice on whatelse to do in order to have this here fixed. Please remember that I can't get my PC to boot in Normal Mode, so downloading software will no longer work at this point. I just ran the already downloaded tools AdAware and Spybot again, but nothing got found. I look forward to a soon reply. Thanks a lot!

I know you asked for removal of this topic
Before I do, can you do the following

Your removal of username is in the hands of Admin......

Can you try this please

Download SmitRem.exe

Save it to your desktop, then double click it and click Start to extract it to it's own folder.

Open the smitRem folder and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen and allow disk cleanup to run when the tool completes.

Reboot back into normal mode and post the contents of the log file the tool creates, C:\smitfiles.txt

Also post a fresh hijackthis log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Thanks, guestolo, for replying, and as matter of fact, I'm very glad you didn't delete the topic, since you helped me a great deal. I followed your steps and am thrilled that the PC is booting in normal mode again for the first time in a week!

However, the PC is still sickening, I can tell for four reasons. First, the desktop wallpaper keeps blinking, switching back and forth from grey to white, and I can't do anything about it, as it doesn't let me modify the properties through a right-click. Second, I'm not sure whether to switch the system configuration (reg) from user- back to normal mode, since I'm being asked that question by the system. Third, the PC tends to freeze over and over again, so I have to keep restarting it but have to press the power button, because I can't use the Ctrl-Alt-Del option ever. And fourth, I can no longer run HijackThis, as it says "Netscape/Mozilla homepage..." and freezes. Do you have any idea what's going on?

More observations: Sometimes a window pops up right after the booting process, identifying "severe problems" relating to C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini100405-01.dmp and in my temporary folder WER3.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml. Also, the PC just got shut down automatically after a one-minute countdown pre-warning, because C:\WINDOWS\systrm32\lsass.exe got "unexpectedly closed" for some random reason. And last but not least, I just received another pop-up, yet this time by AntiVir, saying that a virus was found, i.e. the file FTPUPD.EXE and the den worm/Korgo.U. Does this mean anything to you?

Since I'm leaving in a few hours (i.e. Saturday 1 a.m. PDT) and will be gone for a couple of weeks, I'd really appreciate a very soon response. Thanks a lot in advance!

Below you will now find the contents of the smitfiles.txt file, followed by the current log of HijackThis as well as the complete startuplist by HijackThis:

I would like you to run an online virus scan at Panda's when you return
The link is in my signature

Before running the scan, go to START>>RUN>>copy and paste the following into the open field
shutdown -a
Keep the run command window open

Then return to Panda's
Select >>Scan MyComputer
When done save the report from Panda's and post the report back here

If, at anytime you get a notice to shutdown, click the OK on the Run command
This should prevent a shutdown in 1 minute

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Thanks, guestolo, for your latest posting. Unfortunately, however, what you suggested didn't quite work, because it said that it can't shut down or something like that. A possibly interesting thing I noticed, though, is that the last time the PC wouldn't boot, it was again that blue screen that appeared. However, it no longer said that "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" caused it, but it said "NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS" instead. Do you know what this is supposed to mean?

In the meantime, I was also given the advice to download and run the tool http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixKorgo.exe in Safe Mode, which I did, and before please deleting my account here (as I had asked you before), I would very much appreciate your thoughts on the following result, i.e. here is the content of the FixKorgo.txt file (yet unfortunately, the PC is still infected, despite the successful removal of the Korgo worm):

Symantec W32.Korgo RemovalTool 1.0.6.0

registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wireless\: Client (value deleted)
registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wireless\: ID (value deleted)
registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\: Cryptographic Service (value deleted)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Lokale Einstellungen\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\E7W34BSX\x[1].exe: (deleted)

W32.Korgo has been successfully removed from your computer!

Here is the report:

The total number of the scanned files: 63212
The number of deleted files: 1
The number of viral processes terminated: 0
The number of registry entries fixed: 3
