spy sherriff? virus? help please :)
« on: November 15, 2005, 02:09:10 AM »
I thought I learned my lesson...

guestolo could you help me again please?  I ran a file (thought i could trust the program), and suddenly Norton Antivirus detected that I have a virus; it popped up several times with a few different names, but I forgot to note them down.  However, I noticed a NEW "Spy Sherriff" program running, so I uninstalled from add/remove programs.   I have a new icon (a red circle with a white X inside) on the right side of my task bar and a it keeps alerting me that I have spyware.  Also, my wallpaper has been replaced with a blue screen and a black box in the center that says "SPYWARE INFECTION"
Here's my HJT log:

Let's try some cleanup

Download the following , I'm not sure what you still have installed
==Download and Install this small program
to help clean your temp folders,cookies, etc...
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run this yet, we'll need it in a bit

Open Ad-Aware, ensure to click the  check for updates now link and Connect to download the latest updates
Do not run a scan yet

Download Hoster.zip and save it to your Desktop.
UNZIP the contents to your desktop or folder

Download SmitRem.exe by Noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Open Ewido
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Access your Add/Remove programs and remove if found
SpySheriff or SpyAxe

At this time, can you please
RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads, or use the link
I supplied for an alternate method

In safe mode

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Find and delete the following files if found in bold
c:\secure32.html <-this file
C:\winstall.exe <-file
C:\WINDOWS\tool2.exe
C:\WINDOWS\5C.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\paytime.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sysvcs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\epgelplf.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kepbfnak.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\obnkijdb.dll
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.dll <-If you find this file, let me know
Caution, do NOT try and delete svchost.exe in the same folder

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done, decline to log off or restart the computer

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
  *2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
  *3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html

unable to get a report for the Ewido scan; after the scan, it just closes and doesn't give me an option save a report.
Are you saying Ewido just closes completely after the Scan?
I've never heard that one happening before
If you open up the Quarantine section
Are there any entries on the right hand side?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

sorry for the late reply...it's time consuming running Ewido.

Anyways, after a scan, Ewido just closes completely, but I figured out that it only does this when I include my D: to be scanned.  If only my C: is scanned, then I can save a log.  They were all spyware.cookies, so I deleted them.

I'll lock this topic as your problems appear resolved
You should have SpywareBlaster and IE-Spyad installed
Ensure you check for updates with them, as they have both updated recently

It's nice to see you have Service pack 2 installed now, good move

You may want to clear your System restore points again
Stay safe http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
