normal startup is triggering safe mode
« on: November 25, 2005, 08:01:54 AM »
Help! I followed the instuctions for Win32.P2P-Worm.Alcan.a, posted by questolo Jul 26 2005, 12:00 PM. AS instucted I went into safe mode twice, using msconfig. The first time was OK, msconfig asked me to select Normal Startup and promted me to restart and it was fine. Second time I did the same , select Normal startup and resterted, but it went into safe mode! I fond that selecting Normal Startup was triggering Safe Mode and vice versa. Please HELP. this is getting annoying.

« Reply #2 on: November 26, 2005, 01:14:57 AM »
Can you do the following

Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Navigate to the following file
by double clicking "MyComputer">>Double click "C:\"drive to open it
Look for the Boot.ini file
double click to open it
Look for a line that looks similiar to the following in bold

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP " /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn  /safeboot:minimal

Left click to Highlight ONLY the following if found, anything after OptIn
/safeboot:minimal
Delete this and then close out
Save the change when prompted
Reboot the computer
Back in windows, you may get another prompt from msconfig
Ensure Normal startup is selected and reboot one more time
Come back here and post one more hijackthis log

I found the boot.ini file, but I could not edit it.
Had a friend over who edited it in it's backup file and it seems to be OK !?!

Here the HJT log file.

Hi questolo
Thank you for your time. I am quite new to the net  so I really apreciate your help.

My freind told me that he couldn't edit it originally so he edited the backup file. He was kind of vague about it though, not quite sure what he did. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':unsure:\' />

Things are OK for now thanx.
