Hijacker gone...now runtime error
« on: November 26, 2005, 11:01:53 PM »
Looks like I got another highjacker.  My only other one was back in January.  I did a lot of the same things that I was instructed to do back then.  When I ran HiJackThis, I came up with two suspect keys in the log --

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocsvc.dll/BGW.htm#privacyAPIx32;
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vptray] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMANT~1\SYMANT~1\vptray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\program files\quicktime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\System32\NeroCheck.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FHStart] C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocsvc.exe home
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BgMonitor_{79662E04-7C6C-4d9f-84C7-88D8A56B10AA}] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\lib\NMBgMonitor.exe"
O4 - Global Startup: OSA.exe

If I just remove the R0 it just comes back after reboot because of the "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FHStart] C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocsvc.exe home" entry.  If I remove them both then my highjack problem is solved, but I get an error on start up.  It is nothing I can't overcome with a single click but it is annoying.  The error thrown is a dialog box that says "Runtime error 5 at 004046ED".  Should I have done something different rather than a "fix checked" in hijackThis for O4?

I know you might need the whole log and I can certainly post it.  Just let me know.  Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, you didn't post the whole hijackthis log

From my signature below can you run an Online virus scan at Panda's
    * Enter your Country
    * Enter your State/Province
    * Enter your e-mail address and click send
    * Select either Home User or Company
    * Click the big Scan Now button
    * It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    * When the download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
    * When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report back here

Also post a fresh hijackthis log, I need to see the whole thing
After you do a Scan as save log file
The log will open
Click EDIT at the top
and then SELECT ALL
Then EDIT>> COPY
Come back here and PASTE to your reply

Hijacker gone...now runtime error
« Reply #2 on: November 28, 2005, 04:15:32 PM »
Thanks for the link to Panda's.  I did many scans, cleaning things as I went.  I tried to attach the activescan.txt file here but could not so I have copied it at the bottom of this post.  There isn't much left, but there are a few things that I wasn't sure what to do with.

Also, I have run the HiJackThis scan and am posting the full log here.  Again, everything appears to be clean now (no hijackers) but I am getting a runtime error every time I boot.  It started to happen once I removed the "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [FHStart] C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdocsvc.exe home" entry (see original post).  If I put it back then the hijacker returns.

I basically just want to figure out what I did to cause the runtime error and get rid of it.

Thanks for your assistance!

Hijacker gone...now runtime error
« Reply #3 on: November 29, 2005, 12:07:02 AM »
Can you do the following please

Open the Windows Control Panel
START>>Control Panel
Double click to open the Java Icon
Depending on your version

Under the General tab
Click the Delete Files>>OK it

Or
Under the Cache tab>>Clear Cache and ok it

Afterwards

==Download and then Install
Ewido Security Suite

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please  save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
Or Print this out

Reboot your computer into Safe mode
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Select Safe mode from the Startup menu

In safe mode
Set Windows To Show Hidden Files and Folders
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Uncheck the Hide Extensions for known file types
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.
Find and delete the following files or folders if found, careful there are other legit file names that look similiar
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdochp.dll <-this file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shdochp.exe <-file
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\OSA.exe <-file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMPROFILE\FAVORITES\ DATING.url <-file
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\eber.exe <-file

Stay in safe mode
There are a couple other bad files, but Ewido should remove them for you

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
  *2. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido

Do another scan with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

O4 - Global Startup: OSA.exe
It won't be there if found and removed earlier

Fix the next 016's, not all bad, but will be reinstalled if needed
O16 - DPF: {77E32299-629F-43C6-AB77-6A1E6D7663F6} (Groove Control) - http://www.nick.com/common/groove/gx/GrooveAX27.cab

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows,
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot back to Normal mode

Post a fresh Hijackthis log and the Whole report from Ewido's

Hijacker gone...now runtime error

Okay, the start up error is now gone and things are functioning as expected.  I could not find shdochp.exe but Ewido found it and removed it.  I also could not find shdochp.dll but Ewido didn't find that one.  I found all the other files and removed them.  I also found a lot of left over Porn files in Favorites from the last time this happened in April and removed those as well.

It concerns me that most things we download are from MSN (games) and Nick and that we continue to get these things.  I would have really hoped that they would have made sure their products are clean.

I ran Ewido and reran HiJackThis.  The logs are here (couldn't add as an attachment) --

Hijacker gone...now runtime error

I just had you remove those Activex controls, not all may be bad
And will be reinstalled if needed

I'm not positive where you got the installer that infected you this time

Can you do the following, if you didn't intentionally install Viewpoint
Access your add/remove programs and remove it

Reboot your computer

Back in Windows,
Do you have SpywareBlaster installed? If so what version is it?

Can I see a fresh hijackthis log from Normal mode please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

I removed Viewpoint.  It has been on there for a while, but I don't remember when or why it was installed.  To my knowledge, I do not have Spywareblaster.  I have many products for different things.  My main one is Norton AV which continues to prove useless.  I also have AdAware which I don't use as frequently.  I have a few others that I have installed per your direction but I don't think Spywareblaster is one of them.

Here is the most recent HiJackThis log --

« Reply #7 on: December 02, 2005, 11:56:46 PM »
Very sorry for the delay

For some final cleanup
Can you do the following

If everything is running better, please do the following
You should disable system restore>>Reboot your computer>>and then reenable it
This will clear all your restore points and ensure you don't restore any nasties
How to Disable and Re-enable System Restore feature

Once System Restore is reenabled

You should install this free tool
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

Check for updates every couple of weeks
after every update just simply click the "enable protection...."
