WIndows XP Firewall
« on: January 07, 2006, 05:59:37 AM »
I have a problem with an infected pc. used the following programes tot get rid of some of the prolems:

Spybot
XoftSpy (purchased)
ewido
smitrem
Ad Aware
cc\\CCleaner

And things look much better now - but - whenever I try to access Windows Firewall through the Control Panel I get this message : Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings

Spybot showed a clean bill yesterday - today it shows up Windows.ActiveDesktop. It fixes the problem but it comes back.

The stuff that I seem to have gotten rid of successfully:

Spy-Sherrif
Winfixer

Herewith the Hijack This log:

Sorry for the delay Hermann
Can you do the following please

SmitRem has been updated, I want to make sure you run the latest version

Delete your copy of SmitRem.exe and the SmitRem folder
Download this copy of
SmitRem.exe by Noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Don't run it yet

Save the rest of these instructions to a Notepad file saved to your desktop or Print them out for use in safe mode

Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open "Process Manager"
Highlight and then Kill these processes
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient\VCClient.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient\VCMain.exe

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [drsmartloadb] c:\\drsmartloadb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [banmanpro] C:\windows\banmanpro.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CU1] C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient\VCClient.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CU2] C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient\VCMain.exe

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu

Find and delete these files and folder if found
C:\drsmartloadb.exe <-file
C:\windows\banmanpro.exe <-file
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VCClient <-folder

==Double click on SmitRem.exe to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Reboot back to Normal mode

If the firewall still won't enable, try the following please others have had success with
Go to START>>RUN>>type this in exactly, or copy and paste this into the open field than click OK
Netsh winsock reset

Reboot your computer again

Back in Windows
Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)

In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Automatic
If it's not set this way
START the service--If not running

If you had to change any of those settings
Reboot the computer one more time

Back in Windows
Enter the Windows Control Panel and make sure the firewall is enabled

Do this regardless of what happens in the previous steps
Use Internet Explorer and Run the online Panda ActiveScan
    * Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
    * A new window will open...click the big Check Now button.
    * Enter your Country.
    * Enter your State/Province.
    * Enter your e-mail address.
    * Select either "Home User or Company."
    * Click the big Scan Now button.
    * Allow the ActiveX component to install and download the files required for the scan. This may take a couple of minutes.
    * Click on Local Disks to start the scan.

When the scan is complete
click See Report, then click Save Report and save it to your Desktop.

Post back the following please
1. Post back a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the full report from Panda's
3. Post the report from Smitrem located here C:\Smitfiles.txt

Thanks so much for your inputs - I did eventually re-install XP and all seems fine now - but I have learnt a lot and have come to appreciate the work that's being done on this forum

Best regards

Don't worry about the donation, you seemed to solve it all yourself  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
I would do this for free anyways

Can you help to keep your computer stay that way please

For added protections
You should install this free tool
SpywareBlaster 3.4 by JavaCool
*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"

Check for updates every couple of weeks
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

Also, even though it's a fresh install,
I would
Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE
After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete
Click the "Immunize" button on the left>>>OK at the prompt>>Immunzine at the top green cross

You may even want to run a scan
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete

Stay safe, and thanks for posting back  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />
FIX all selected promblems in RED

RESTART the computer to finish any cleaning process if anything found bad
Do the above after every update
