duf pop-up removal
« on: February 24, 2006, 02:31:57 PM »
Hi there,
My name is Greg and recently I've been having some real problems with a pop-up called "duf" - which seems to stream media of it's own accord - whenever it wants - yet I wouldn't have a clue how to remove it. After checking out "TechGuide" it seems that this is a rather common occurance. I was hoping that somebody would please help me pin point the problem. I have run "HijackThis" and the report is as follows:

Hi Birdman,
If removal is as simple as entering the directory and deleting the file - I can handle it - I'm pretty computer literate - If there is more too it, then I'm a quick learner, but I might need a shove in the right direction. I appreciate all your help guys - Thanks very much!

Hello

Download smitrem from one of these locations save the file to your desktop. (By noahdfear.)
smitRem.exe (http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click%20counter/click.php?id=1)
smitRem.exe (www.downloads.subratam.org/smitRem.exe)
smitRem.exe (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/noahdfear/smitRem.exe)
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Dont use it yet.

download http://www.ewido.net/en/download/  (dont forget to update)
Dont use yet.
Download Ad-Aware   (dont forget to update)
Dont use yet.
And also If you dont not have a virus scanner plz look at sticky at top of forum
"Pinned: Recommended Spyware/malware Removal and preventive tools"
And download a virus scanner, only if you dont have one installed already..
Restart the PC into safe mode
Start Hijackthis and place a check next to these items If there.
Close all browser windows and shut down all other programs that show in the taskbar.

Hit fix checked and close Hijackthis.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.
Run Ewido scan and fix all it finds, save the log to post later.
Run a virus scan (make sure its updated)
Restart back to a normal windows session. If your windows xp style has switched to classic style follow next set of instructions.
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present. click the apperence tab under Windows and buttons change it to Windows XP style > click apply and OK.

Plz post new hijack log and the logs i asked for thanks  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />      Did you install firefly.?
