Diseased Computer - I've tried EXTENSIVELY to fix..
« on: February 23, 2006, 11:45:33 PM »
Alright, thanks ahead of time to those of you who take a moment to try and help me out.

So i've read every helpfile known to man, and searched the internet everywhere because i wanted to fix it myself, but i probably just screwed it more.

My computer started having major problems in nov/05 – to the extent that I was no  longer even able to connect to the internet, due to error reports saying “make sure smss.exe or lsass.exe or csrss.exe etc can connect to the internet” this message would follow my modem (dial-up – fax modem) establishing a connection ever so briefly, then abruptly disconnecting.
In looking through my system since then, I believe whatever is causing the problem, (besides the obvious Trojan/viruses/spyware) dates back to march/april/05 (if that has any validity.)

To continue- The problems are probably intense, as I was/am running win2000 and did not have any sort of norton antivirus tools, or other firewalls in place. (And I don’t know if win2000 has a default f/w? even so, I did not configure it) so its my own fault, and I’m kicking myself for it - anyways- I have downloaded (from a separate o/s - which I am/have been having to access since November for any d/l or internet activity –I know, boo hoo, get on to the problem, but it’s a major pain it the ass!- I feel like its 92’ again or something) installed/ran the following to no avail-microsoft malicious software removal tool, search and destroy, hijack this, f-secure firewall (yeah a little late),  etc- malware has indeed been removed, however I am still unable to A) View a modem category in my Device Drivers B)Have my computer recognize my modem, C)install a new modem = basically, anything that would allow me to access the internet.

But yes, it gets worse from here see- I effed around w/ it so much, that I got to the bluescreen that tells you all of those errors. I was planning on upgrading my o/s sometime anyway, but I didn’t want to do it with viruses and problems already on my computer (because the files would all be infected and when i transfered etc) but I did anyways, so NOW I have XP professional installed, which I also installed Norton antivirus on, but I can’t update because I don’t have any connection. also I installed my XP from the bluescreen, (basically got pissed an inserted the disk) I thought I’d mention, incase it makes a difference- I’m sure I’ll be having to uninstall it anyway- the xp environment appears to be sound – but I moved basically all my files over to the new o/s basically diseasing it I’m sure.
I am still unable to install a modem on the XP interface, and am not able to view it in the device drivers there either, so there are still evident problems somewhere..and Norton antivirus is continually alerting me to update, and that there is viruses and whatnot on my computer that need to be dealt with.
So I’m sure I’m not being specific enough-I will do what I can to get a HJT log onto a RSD and upload it here, and hopefully that will help to diagnose further?
If anyone can help or recognizes some of the problems please, I’d appreciate the help.
Thanks for your time, guys.
