system cannot find winlogon.exe in the inet20004 directory
« on: March 08, 2006, 06:59:05 PM »
i had a run in  with spyaxe and spyfalcon. i run xoftspy software and it told me i had some threats but it would not remove them for some reason. i contacted xoftspy and they had me run xoftspyfix, regfix, hijackthis, and ccleaner. then bugs seemed to go away, but now i have the message " can not run or locate c:\windows\inet\20004\winlogon.exe" or something simular to this. i contacted xoftspy again and all they want me to do is run the same software packages listed above. this does not seem to solve the problem. also my internet connection( dsl ran through a router) seems very slow. this comes and goes at least it seems that way. please help. i am new to thetechguide and i really dont know how all this works.

thanks
leroy

Let's take a closer look please
From my signature below, download and save too a permanent folder of it's own on your harddrive
Hijackthis 1.99.1
Open Hijackthis.exe

Do a SCAN and Save a Log file
A text file will open in notepad when it's done
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

system cannot find winlogon.exe in the inet20004 directory
« Reply #3 on: March 10, 2006, 12:19:25 AM »
Can you do the following please
Ensure you follow all instructions closely

==Download The Avenger by Swandog46
and save it to your Desktop.
Right click on avenger.zip and
Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
We will need it later

==Download and save to your "C:drive"
fender.txt
So you now have a "C:\fender.txt" file
[attachment=474:attachment]

Download SmitRem.exe by Noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Don't run it yet

==Download and Install
Windows Cleanup! 4.0
Don't run it yet

==Download and Install Spybot 1.4 from
HERE
 or HERE
After installation--Click the UPDATE button on the left
SEARCH FOR UPDATES on the right
Check, and then download all updates
After update is complete close it out for now as we will need it later

==Download and then Install
Ewido anti-malware 3.5

When installing, under "Additional Options" Uncheck
 "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".

From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Close out Ewido for now, we'll need it later
If for some reason the Updater won't work can you manually download the
Updates from this link after you have Ewido installed
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/

Please save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
Ensure Load Script from File: is selected
and then click the folder Icon on the right side of that section.
Then browse to C:\fender.txt
Left click once to Highlight it and then click Open
To Select it
Click on the "Traffic light" icon and OK the prompt
You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it.

Back in Windows
Don't open any browser windows yet, instead

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\archi.exe
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\inet20004\winlogon.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SystemLoader] C:\WINDOWS\sysldr32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinMedia] C:\WINDOWS\system32\wwwloader.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: htproc - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\htproc32.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: msupdate - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msupdate32.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ur32artreg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\ur32art.dll

The 020 entries should show (file missing) if everything was done properly with Avenger earlier

After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done, decline to log off or restart the computer

==Double click on SmitRem.exe to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish. Remain in safe mode

==Open Ewido Security Suite
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
  *2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
  *3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to desktop
Exit Ewido

Open Spybot 1.4
Click the "Search & Destroy" button on the left
"Check for Problems"---When the Scan is complete
FIX ALL selected promblems in RED

Reboot back to Normal mode

1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the Whole report from Ewido's
3. Post the Whole log made from SmitRem located here C:\Smitfiles.txt
4. Avenger.exe would of produced a report>>>C:\avenger.txt
Please post the whole contents

NOTE: You will have to reset your background in Display properties
XP users using the XP theme may experience a change to the Classic Windows theme. This can be changed on the themes tab of desktop properties.

That looks good now
I would of liked to seen the Ewido report, when you logged into safe mode you may have logged in with the
hidden Adminstrator account
The log may be saved too

system cannot find winlogon.exe in the inet20004 directory
« Reply #6 on: March 13, 2006, 07:38:04 PM »
hi.  i reran everything in your previous instructions. my wife was playing sims and for some reason she decided to run xoftspy. it seemed to mess everything up. she said it found 13 problems and she told the software to fix it. my internet connection went to crap. so i decided to run through those commands again. i hope this was the right thing to do. here are all the logs i could find.

The logs look fine
I'm not a big fan of Xoftspy
Do you know what it found?

We weren't quite done with everything

Did you not see this ?

I would of liked to seen the Ewido report, when you logged into safe mode you may have logged in with the
hidden Adminstrator account
The log may be saved too
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop
OR
you may of saved it to the default location
C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\Reports

yes i saw your quote the first time and i looked there. i sent you all the reports i could find( this includes the reports that would be found in the directories you listed) as for xoftspy. no i do not know what it found. i was not at the computer when the software was run and my wife does not remember what it said. if you would like i can run xoftspy and post what it finds this time. i am curious as to why you are not a fan of xoftspy. i can tell you that after i ran through you instructions after xoftspy did its thing that my internet speed appears to be normal. is there any other information i can provide. thank you for your understanding for the misshap
