network max speed
« on: December 07, 2001, 02:47:43 AM »
hi, does anyone know what else can we install for network in order to increase the speed when transfering to local network.(i.e.house mates in a house sharing with 3 people using cable modem)
i\'ve installed client for microsoft networks, file and printing sharing for networks, and internet protocol(tcp/ip).
i heard that you can install one more protocol and it\'ll increase the speed for transfering file and stuff...

actually installing more than one slows the network down because you have two protocols to deal with now instead of one. just stay with tcp/ip. also depends on the network cards you are using see if you have 10/100 type cards and see if they\'re sending at 100Mbps because 100Mbps should be more than plenty.
if at first you dont succeed, call it version 1.0

Microsoft\'s netBEUI

is the fastest network protocol in NON-ROUTED MS Networks environment. use this protocol in your case.

You could try NWLink as well, it faster than TCP/IP but slower than netBIOS

Because you have TCP/IP installed make sure that protocol BINDING is also properly configured...

And more:
For security reason you must disable netBIOS over TCP/IP or you will be providing access of your shared files to all people connected to  internet

And you should make sure that TCP/IP is not bound to File and Print Sharing + Client For Microsoft Networks.

Settings are a little bit different, which OS r\'  u\' using?

yep

but he\'s sharing his cable modem which i assume is running tcp/ip so all those choices you gave him would not work. all 3 pc\'s need tcp/ip to share the internet connection....

netbeui can\'t be used...stick to tcp/ip and look into the transfer speed of your nic cards!!!!
if at first you dont succeed, call it version 1.0

Hi!

Windows XP doesn\'t support netBEUI (Protocol). >>>You have to add protocol  *NWLINK IPX/SPX/NETBIOS Compatible Protocol

To connect to internet u  use TCP/IP, that way it must be installed on all computer and should be bound to all adapter (Protocol bound is configured through connection properties)

To share Files within a local network you can use above mentioned protocol, it is faster than TCP/IP

You might need to  Disable TCP/IP  in File sharing).

To disable it
1.Open Network Folder in Control Panel
2.Choose Advanced on Advanced Settings Menu
there you can change bindings in connections services and protocols
3.On top pane select appropriate connection (if you have more than one)
4. on the bottom pane uncheck the TCP/IP under File and Printer sharing.

Note:
The Protocol must be installed on all computer which have to share their files.
