As i am sure you have all heard so many times before.... Got Bloodhound and cant get rid of the little S**t!!

So my story so far..... Nortan --- cant remove. Tried every Spyware remover under the sun... No help. read for hours on the net on "how to remove" Managed to clean 2 out of 3 files. Now Bloodhound is still hiding in "c:/windows/system32/wininet.dll"

Don't run any other AV's or other anti-malware programs
SmitRem can find a replacement on your computer or Panda's can disinfect the file

Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box please, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
IMPORTANT>>>Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as fix.reg

Save this file on the desktop. We'll need it in a bit
Ensure to copy from REGEDIT4 and down in the code box

Double-click on the smitRem.exe file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.




We'll need this later

Save the rest of these instructions to a Notepad file saved to your desktop or Print them out for use in safe mode

If SpyKiller is in your Add/Remove programs
Remove it, as it is not a recommended product

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu

In safe mode

Open the SmitRem folder located on the desktop


Double-click on the RunThis.bat file, as shown by the arrow in the image above, to start the tool.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Remain in safe mode
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html

O4 - Startup: PowerReg SchedulerV2.exe


After you have ticked the above entry, close All other open windows
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Reboot your computer back into Normal Mode.

Access Internet Options via Control Panel
Under the Programs tab "Reset Web Settings"
Under the General tab---Delete files + offline content
Use Internet Explorer and Run the online Panda ActiveScan

    * Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
    * A new window will open...click the big Check Now button.
    * Enter your Country.
    * Enter your State/Province.
    * Enter your e-mail address.
    * Select either "Home User or Company."
    * Click the big Scan Now button.
    * Allow the ActiveX component to install and download the files required for the scan. This may take a couple of minutes.
    * Click on MyComputer to start the scan.

When the scan is complete
 click See Report, then click Save Report and save it to your Desktop.
Reboot your computer again

Back in Windows, please post back all the following
1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the whole report from Panda's
3. Post the log created from Smitrem>>C:\Smitfiles.txt

Hi,

Thanks for your help so far.

I can do everything you instructed except the last ( Panda ActiveScan ) The laptop in question can not connect to the internet as a result of bloodhound, so i can not do the online check. Do you have another solution??

Next  I did a scan only with hijackthis. The only entry I could find was:

Fix Check this entry as instructed.

Accessed Internet Options.. All done successfully.

As mentioned earlier i can not get any internet connection on this laptop so could not do the Panda scan.

Can you double click on fix.reg and allow to add/merge to the registry please

Then have Hijackthis fix checked this entry with all other windows closed
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html

Reboot your computer

Right, Fixreg done,

Re not connecting. The laptop lost connectivity after infection (So I was told), I presumed that this was the reason. I run a wireless network at home and have tried connecting the laptop to the networ, but it will not connec t to the DHC server to complete IP addressing. I have tried ipcongig /release & renew... no joy.This laptop has no Network card so can not connect directly to my adsl router. (From this you can gather that it is not the newest laptop in the world  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Sorry for the delay
Let's see if we can clean a couple more files

Please download [color=\"red\"]SmitfraudFix[/color][/url] (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

In SAFE MODE
open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.
Or Reboot anyways!


Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt
and a Hijackthis log

Do you have your Windows CD or do you have another computer with XP on it that has NO updates
including SP1 or SP2 that we can use a file from?

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to me.

Just an update for you. I have figured out whay the laptop will not connect to my network It appears to be an hardware conflict between my wireless network and his wireless card. The laptop works fine now on his network and can connect to the internet. I asked him how legit is his copy of XP and he advised me that the laptop is an ex work laptop that he bought and the copy of xp is legit as it still has a corporate copy installed.

The laptop is back with him, so I will get him to do do as you requested and report back here tomorrow with all requested reports.
