Windows 2000 Pro or Xp?
« on: April 19, 2002, 05:16:01 AM »
I am currentlyusing Windows XP Pro and I like somethings about it, but overall I think Windows 2000 Pro was better.

One of the main reasons I stick with it is due to the System Restore Wizard that is also in Windows ME. I hated ME by the way.

Is there a way of doing something similiar in Windows 2000? I would love to run that OS again. I gained so much from it.

Any help would be great.

You cannot compare an os with allready two service packs and a third coming , with a new one without  any service pack yet .I remember the early days of win 2000 , I got my blue screens too .
Restore doesn\'t work for every installation of buggy software and drivers , but it is handy . I prefer Image back ups of the drive or partition the OS is on , so you can put them back when there is a major problem and everything works as before . But that\'s my idea .
On the other hand ,winxp is good and even better than win2000 , There are compatibility issues ,f.e. with some digital cameras , but you can allways install a cardreader without problems .
But then everybody is entitled to his opinion .

The main reason I don\'t like WinXP (honestly, the only reason), is due to the \'infinite loop\'-bug on Nvidia and VIA-chipsets. At present, it\'s a problem-without-fixes which causes lots of trouble for most users. Not thinking of that, however, I think it\'s a wonderful OS; I think I\'ll continue using it as the problem is solved, but until then I\'ll do Win2000 Pro with SP2 (actually I\'m just about installing it).

I heard about some problems ,but I have a 440bx chipset , and didn\'t experience any similiar problems  .I have a geforce 3 ti-200 . But then I understand  people sticking to w2K , when XP gives them problems .

the main reason I\'m going to abandon Xp on my system is the fact that even the best 3rd party voodoo drivers crash, and the default xp voodoo drivers dont contain glide, I may use Xp after SP1 and there are some official XP drivers that support Glide/openGL http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

I double boot xp with w2k , but usually I boot up in win xp . Isn\'t  3dfx  out of the circuit (I have had a voodoo 3 3000).
Didn\'t  nvidea take over , but there are no officiial new drivers since  there\'s a lot of 3rd party drivers .I don\'t think xp will adapt to them , but I could be wrong .

You are correct, NVIDIA did buy 3dFX technology licences see here ; this doesn’t mean the end of the voodoo cards as NVIDIA has announced that the XP voodoo drivers will be released later this year. But I bet the drivers will now be fully optimised as they are trying to get the voodoo users onto G-force cards, I\'m also sceptical if tey will ever reliece the drivers http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />
