Very slow win98se

Au secours ,help, hilfe , ayuda me .
I saw a p3 733  with 512mb sdram with a Geforce Video card a sound card , and a network card .
13gb left of free space and defragmented a week ago .
The problem is , opening f.e. my computer, iIE6.0 , incredimail , takes about 1 minute or more . I know the guy installs a lot of demos or other programs to try them out .
Could there be a special reason for this really nerve wrecking symptom  .I hope someone can give me a hint .
Personally I think it\'s a virus not found with nav yet (latest update)
