Malware problem, hijacked browser XP,
« on: May 07, 2006, 07:03:11 PM »
Alright..I will start at the beginning.  I had an infected computer, I believe with SpyAxe, and a few others.  I had the fake security warnings, pop ups, and a hijacked browser.  After some research I did the following.

Went into safe mode.  Ran Windows Cleaner.  Then ran SmitRemFix.  Then ran Ewido.  All according to directions I had found to remove this nasty bugger.  I then ran SpyBot search and destroy again.   Finally I thought I was clean.  No pop ups, no fake security warning.  Unfortunately my home page is still hijacked by guarduptodate.com, and I cannot access many pages, and no java based gaming sites.  I downloaded and ran, hijackthis.  Here is a copy of the log.  I don't know what to do!!  Thanks in advance for any help!!

Can you do the following
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please disable eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware realtime protections if running as they may interfere with any fixes that we try, leave these disabled until after we are sure you are clean

==Download and install Windows CleanUp! 4.5.1
Don't run this yet
NOTE: If you have an older version of Windows CleanUp!, Please uninstall it and use this newer version

Open Ewido Anti-malware
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
Let it update and then close it, we will need it later

Please save these instructions to a Notepad file and save it to your Desktop for reference
or Print them out!

RESTART your Computer in SAFE MODE
You can do this by tapping the F8 key as the system is restarting, just before Windows loads
Choose Safe mode from the startup menu
In safe mode

==Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

    * Empty Recycle Bins
    * Delete Cookies
    * Delete Prefetch files
    * Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
When it's done>>Click Close
DECLINE to Log off or Restart the computer

==Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process
I'll need to see these later, by default they are also saved at C:\rapport.txt

If a reboot was required, reboot back to safe mode
If it wasn't required, remain in safe mode

==Open Ewido Anti-malware
Click on the Scanner button on the left menu
Select Complete System Scan
*If Ewido finds something it will prompt you with "Infected Object found"
Ensure the following are Selected
  *1. Perform Action = Remove
*2. Create Encrypted Backup in Quarantine (Recommended)
*3. Perform action with all infections
  Then click OK
When Ewido has finished it's scan click the "Save Report" button
Save the report to the desktop or someplace you will remember
Exit Ewido
NOTE: When Ewido is running, don't open any other windows, let it run uninterrupted

Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

Looks like you may have ran Smitfraudfix option 2 a couple times
That is why the log is empty
That's ok, at least the bad files/folders and reg. entries are gone

Optionally,
You can fix the next ones with Hijackthis
They are not needed on startup, and can speed bootup times and resources if not running
If you choose to fix them
Run another scan with Hijackthis and put a tick by these next entries

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tgcmd] "C:\Program Files\support.com\bin\tgcmd.exe" /server
Quote
This part ensures the software is installed correctly (similar to an installation wizard) as reported by Cox http://www.cox.com/info/policy.asp. Regarded as spyware by some http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_t.htm as it has the ability to retrieve user information. Whether it does so depends upon the provider.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
Quote
System Tray access to Apple's Quick Time viewer from version 5 onwards
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] "C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe"
Quote
Loads the System Tray icon for the WinAmp media player. Can be used to mantain file associations so programs like QuickTime and RealPlayer don't take over as default player for various media types. Available via Start - Programs

O4 - Global Startup: Compaq Connections.lnk = C:\Program Files\Compaq Connections\1940576\Program\BackWeb-1940576.exe

messaging service that automatically sends you support information tips ideas and special offers from HP and our partners especially designed for HP and Compaq desktop computer owners.

Reboot the computer after any of the above are fixed checked with Hijackthis

NOTE: I see signs of the following on your computer
Are they all up to date?
If not, do you need free anti-spyware solutions?
eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware
InterMute
Spyware Doctor

What other anti-spyware do you have installed?

Do you have any Anti-Virus software installed, if not, do you need a free solution?

Let me know the above, we just have some final cleanup afterwards

Been a busy week for me!  Thanks for the response..ok I did that..except for the winamp..I did want to keep that.  I am not using etrust, intermute and spy doctor anymore, I thought I got rid of all the files, but there seems to be a couple that I cant get rid of.   Right now I am using Zone Alarm, Spybot Search and Destroy, I also kept Ewido.  I could use a good antivirus..I hated Norton.   Any other suggestions?

I have links to free AV's
but can you do the following please
Uninstall any old Spwareprotection programs that you can't update anymore
Keep Spybot 1.4 or Ad-aware Se Personal 1.06

Afterwards
Restart the computer
Install a free Anti-virus software
All the below have a free version, ONLY install one, more than one will cause conflicts'
After installation ensure you run a full system scan, keep your new AV, it's yours for free

Choose from one of the following below, they all have a good reputation
AVG 7 by Grisoft

Avast Home Edition by ALWIL

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic

Remember, ONLY ONE

After the scan and cleansing post back a fresh hijackthis log and let me know how everythings running please

Ok...I couldn't find any files that remain for the old spyware programs I had.   I downloaded AVG..So I now have that, Zone Alarm, Spybot and Ewido.  Should I keep Ewido and Windows Cleaner?  Everything seems to be running great.  I don't seem to have a ton of stuff trying to get in and out when I look at my logs on Zone Alarm, and not a ton of processes running either.    Any other tips?  I so appreciate your help, and I have a lot more confidence in taking care of any problems that may crop up!  I would sing your praises, but have a lousy voice..lol  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

Oops!  I do have a google toolbar which shows up in my add/remove programs..I click to remove it, and it seems like it is removing it, but then it is still in the program list.  Not sure if I need to do anything with that.

I don't see Google toolbar in your Hijackthis log
Chances are, you don't need it with SP2 installed
Open Hijackthis>>Open Misc tools section>>Open Uninstall Manager
Left click to Hightlight ONLY Google toobar
and select "Delete this entry"
Ok the prompt and then close hijackthis

Final Cleanup
If everything is running better
We should flush all your restore points to ensure you don't restore any nasties that may be sitting idle
Go to START>>RUN>>In the open field
    Type in
msconfig
Click OK
Click the "Launch System Restore" button
On the Left hand side click on "System Restore Settings"
Put a Check in "Turn off System Restore"
Apply it and OK out of there>>Reboot your computer
Back in Windows, Go back and take the check out of "Turn off system restore"
This will reenable the System Restore feature and creates a new restore point
Protect yourself against Future Attacks
*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates and then click the "Enable all protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

*Make sure your Anti-Virus software is always kept up to date and actively running in the background

*Make sure your Firewall is enabled and running
A Firewall is also very important
This provides a line of defense against someone who might try to access your computer without your permission

Update and do scan's with your Anti-Spyware programs on a regular basis

*Keep up to date on Windows updates (High Priorities)
This is the most important step in keeping your system secure

Use a browser that is more secure than IE>>Try Mozilla Firefox
It's yours for free
Take a look
I wouldn't be without it!

Quote
Should I keep Ewido and Windows Cleaner
Personally, I would, CleanUp!>>Clear those temp files and cookies every couple of weeks
Please read the help file, Standard cleanup may do fine for you

Ewido>>I would hold onto it even after it becomes a free limited version after a couple weeks
Great scanner to update and run on a monthly basis

Stay safe  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':D\' />
