Desktop Hijack... I think..
« on: November 09, 2006, 06:18:02 PM »
Hi there, recently I've been infected by a load of spyware... from opening an infected file.  I've managed to clear up everything.. including a Command Service, Smitfraud, BookedSpace, and several others.. however, there's one more thing that remains, and that's an infected desktop.  I've attached a screenshot of what it looks like, which is apparently including a few iframes that link to websites.  Occasionally I still get popups, which I suspect is from these frames..

However, Spybot, and Adaware both can't detect this problem, with updated queries, searches from both return with clean system scans.. So I'm hoping someone here will have an idea on what this problem may be..

Thanks in advance =)

Almost forgot... here's the HJT log file.

Can you do the following for me please
Let's check a few things

Download this file - Combofix.exe and save it too desktop
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Post the log from combofix please

+Download the latest version of  SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks very much for the reply, I've done both, and here are the reports.  However, I've managed to make the desktop problem disappear.  Apparently, unchecking two of the "view webpage on desktop" options removed the frames.  However, I just want to be sure that if there infact is hidden software that they are removed.

However, I've managed to make the desktop problem disappear. Apparently, unchecking two of the "view webpage on desktop" options removed the frames.
That was part of our next step, you beat me to it  http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />

Can you do the following please
I want to check on a few files
I'm sure there bad guys, but let's double check
Go to either of these links
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Thanks VERY much for your help guestolo =)

C:\Program Files\DeluxeCommunications
C:\WINDOWS\UGV0ZXI

These two folders weren't found, so I'm guessing they were deleted previously.

Here's the final HJT log.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that nothing's wrong...

Looks good
If everything is running better
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Create a New restore point
Name it and click create
When that's done

Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating

Select the 'More Options' tab
and click Cleanup under System Restore
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

You can delete the following

Combofix.exe
C:\combofix.txt
Smitfraud.zip and the Smitfraud folder

C:\Qoobox<-- if found

If you don't plan on holding onto Hijackthis
Go ahead and remove it from Add/remove programs
Then delete Hijackthis.exe and the backup folder

NOTE: AVG-Antispyware is fully functional for 30 days
After which time it will become a free limited version
It will still update and remove malware after the trial period
Up to you to keep it or uninstall it

*Install  SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

In addition>>Open Spybot 1.4
Click on Immunize>>Ok>>Immunize again at the top green cross
Check for Immunization after every update

Stay safe
