PC should I just trash it?
« on: December 11, 2006, 06:01:18 PM »
I'm 16, so i know a bit about computer hardwear, but not about the realy technical stuff.
I have this pc downstairs, i bought it around 2000. it came with windows ME, and worked perfectly.

A few years ago my mom got her freind to install windows 2000 but it didnt realy work, so she got her other freind to install windows XP pro. he told us that when the first guy installed 2000 it damaged something. i cant remember what because i was like 12 at the time. i think it was the drivers or partitions, but i'm not shure. he did get pro installed.

well anyways it hasnt realy worked, it takes about an hour to start up, 20 mins to open the start menu, its always running out of virtual memory, and its so slow that it wont even support a virus scanner. http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />

what would cause it to be so bad? and would it be posible to fix? Ive been thinking about building a gaming pc, so if i cant get this one working is their any parts I can use from it?

Its a Compaq Presario 5WV257 5000 series.

700 MHz AMD Duron Processor
64 MB Memory
8 MV Nvidia TNT2 Graphics
20 GB Hard Drive
56 K Modem

So should I try to fix it, or should I just use it for parts in my game PC? Would a new processor fix it? 700MHz seems realy low.

ps. this was my first pc.... so it has some sentimental value. I'd like to see it used for something, lol http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />

If your going to build a gaming PC, I doubt there is much you can use from this one

Quote
700 MHz AMD Duron Processor
64 MB Memory
8 MV Nvidia TNT2 Graphics
20 GB Hard Drive
56 K Modem

I wouldn't if think about running XP with only 64mb memory
It's a cheap purchase, if your motherboard can support more RAM, go for it
512mb minimum if it can handle it
It will then be a somewhat good second computer, will load a bit better too

The 8mb graphics isn't that great, but you can turn off some of the bells and whistles in XP
Right click MyComputer>>Left click Properties>>ADVANCED>>SETTINGS under Performance
Select Adjust for Best Performance>>Apply it and OK

Are you free of malware, would you like to check to ensure, that will definitely slow a comp down
Also, might be able to shutdown what doesn't need to be running on startup
If you would like to check, and it's a small tool
Download Hijackthis 1.99.1 from my signature below
SAVE it to your desktop

Double click on hijackthis_sfx.exe on desktop
Click the UNZIP button>>OK the prompt
This will self extract to C:\Program Files\HijackThis
Delete hijackthis_sfx.exe from desktop

Go to START>>RUN
Copy>>paste the following to the open field, then hit OK
%systemdrive%\Program Files\HijackThis
This will open the Hijackthis folder
RIGHT CLICK on Hijackthis.exe and select SEND TO>>Desktop (create shortcut)
You can now run Hijackthis.exe from the new shortcut placed on your desktop

Double click to run Hijackthis.exe
Do a "SCAN and Save a Log file"
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and paste the WHOLE contents of the log  here
