Make 3-in-1 W2K (Pro,Srv,AdvSrv) CD bootable?
« on: December 12, 2002, 03:51:11 AM »
Hi, I\'m really new here, so if by any means my question had been asked and answered before, please kindly show me the URL, thanks in advance.

We\'re a Microsoft Cert. Partner having full MSDN & TechNet(forgot which) subscription. One of the CDs they sent to us is a 3-in-1 Windows 2000 installation CD (all Prof, Server, Adv. Server are in there). Browsing and calculating the file size, it\'s a 1.15 GB total which make sense since the editions are about almost 400 MB each. However, if we look at the CD drive Properties, it shows 486 MB used space which also make sense since a large part of the files are actually identical.

Having this condition would actually be a very benefit for us that we don\'t need to bring so much CDs in the wallet. The problem is, however, the CD is not bootable, where it\'s a severely pain in the ass having to create bootdisk before installation can take place. And another issue is we\'re hardly able to make a slipstreamed version of this 3-in-1 CD.

Anyone here has any idea how to make this disc bootable, and much better, how to make a slipstreamed 3-in-1 bootable version? Is there any recording tool that would smartly identify the identical files and arrange it in a way to be fit into one CD?

Strange is MS send you a 3-1 cd It ALWAYS bootable, so it sounds to me like you have a iffy copy or you are telling a little porky http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':P\' />,

Why dont you do a search for the topic of bootable cd\'s you will find a very lkong thread that is relevant to you.
(It\'s labled \" Bootable Win2k CD with multi OS\'s\" )

Does M$ really have a 3 in1???

i couldnt imagine if they do

Anyways

do this. Put the cd in the drive, use a program called ISO buster to view the image. And if it says bootable...click on that section and extract both the files you see (only one is needed but cant remember which..so get both)

After that open both files. One will be real small and just a ID...the other will be bigger and have the boot sector.
Open that file, in notepad and copy what you see...and paste it in here.

Also even if you cant do that because it is really not bootable...copy all the contents of the cd that lies in the rood and ...well just list what is in the root.

Im really curious to see what microsoft\'s menu selection looks like for choosing which one to install.

IF this is legit...it would be a miracle

Nope, it\'s the official disc that MS sent to its MCParters, MSDN Disc 0013.1 April 2001 (English). Inside has those 3 OSes + Security Rollup Package 1 (stand alone, not slipstreamed). And as far as I remember, they\'d never sent us a bootable 3-in-1 one.

Anyway, thanks for the hints, I had actually read the posts and realize that my question has been thoroughly discussed and resolved, it\'s just when I wanted to reply myself, the topic was still under moderation.

could you still list the contents of the cdrom???? the root atleast.

im interested to see what happens when you boot it and get to the menu

or actually...atleast what happens with the menu when it runs with AUTORUN.INF in windows...

can you post that so we can check it out...i just want to see what m$\'s creativity is like in creating this disc :-)

thanks again

CD contents:
2ENA
2ENP
2ENS
ENGLISHWIN2000ADV_SERV
ENGLISHWIN2000PRO
ENGLISHWIN2000SERVER
ENGLISHWIN2000SRP1
CDROM_IA.5
CDROM_IP.5
CDROM_IS.5
CDROM_NT.5

It\'s not bootable (no such boot menu), it seems that they just dumped the whole CD contents inside each of the folders. I can\'t figure out what are in 2EN? folder, looks like I386 folder but with much fewer files.

I would not put it past M$ at this point.  To begin with the All2K boot sector that Bart sent me is a rip off of a MSDN CD boot sector that booted both XP Pro and Home.  Bart \'simply\' extracted the .bin file and modified it to boot 2000 Pro, Server and ADV Server.  Don\'t ask me how, I am still trying to figure that out myself.  I don\'t know assembly code.  Another cool rip was when Peter Fjellström sent in all the edits for including SRP1 into the install.  I finally found a M$ KB articale describing the same process about a week later at their site.  I make no claim as to who did it first but my vote is that Peter was first.

Just my two cents....
Hope this Helps,

What is inside the 2EN? dir\'s is most likely the files from the boot floppies. Looks to me like it\'s a phony from here. I wouldnt put much past M$ myself either though. If it is a real cd. I can tell you it\'s not something i would trust then. I would trust a \"Warez\" copy before i would trust that REAL M$ disc. If it\'s all setup to be bootable..and doesnt boot...then what else could they of messed up??

Also i think it is a phony  because they put the boot files in the 2EN? dir\'s but they didnot include a autorun.inf file to execute a boot floopy maker. Which seems to be that they would of because that only makes sense. Then again, its m$

Heheh, while most of you are really convinced I possess a phony disc, it\'s really the green disc came out from MSDN subscription (not sure what subscription type MCPartners received). The green ones are the platforms (OSes), the blue ones are the applications (Office, etc.), the orange onesare the servers (SQL, etc.), the white/silver ones are the libraries. However, I must agree taht the 2EN? folders are boot files, how M$ doesn\'t get it bootable, I have no idea ;-)
