Dell XP

Dell sent me a CD to upgrade my Dell laptop from Win2K to XP Pro.  I would rather use the XP CD to upgrade my home brew PC from 2K to XP, but the CD fails with some innacurate error msg.  I have seen on another site that Dell has somehow coded the CD to only work on a Dell PC.  How can I get past this?

Dell really has you by the balls with those CDs....I guess all the other computer manufacturers do, too.
