Recovery console on CD

I was wondering if it\'s possible to put the Windows 2000 recovery console on CD by itself?

I have tried trimming down the Windows 2000 setup files, and also copying the recovery console files from the hard disk but I just can\'t get it to work.

Anyone achieved this?

no and good luck since it would be easier just to burn out a cd with the whole shabang. However im curious to try it. What is the files you have found so far that are related to the recovery console.

now im guessing it would be difficult since it still has the security on it...but i guess coudl be done

oh btw im not sure maybe you know...but wouldnt all the recovery console files be on the cd and not the hardisk. Being that the recovery console starts blind and does not ask for a password until it see\'s a recovery console on a drive. Otherwise it would ask you for a password to only the first install straight off the bat instead of asking you which system you want to boot. So it seems to me that the recovery console scans the parititions for that recovery console file, finds them and brings them back. which would mean that the recovery console the hdd would be the wrong one since the one on your hdd requires a password right. By that matter the recovery console on your hardisk, if it was the same as the one that is booting your system, would immediately ask you for a password to the install it belongs too and boot that install. Instead it ask\'s  you for which system to boot so it\'s just playing a game of tag to the parititions to find it partner. And that is something you don\'t need.

I would check the cd again if my secondary ide wasnt \"broke\" to acess the cdroms. but right now i have to wait 6 days until the raid controller gets here so i can use more than just my 2 hdd\'s on my master.

i have not seen a way for this to be done. This is mainly do to the fact that you can boot into recovery console while booting off the standard windows 2000 install disk. This can be done 2 ways, 1 at the welcome menu press R then C and you at at recovery console, OR 2 at the welcome screen press F10 and you are in recovery console.

if you are looking for a program that will give you access to the hard drive but is not an OS, then i would look into ERD commander at www.winternal.com.

I have to strongly disagree with you there. Im pretty sure it would be fairly simple if you knew what files to have prep\'d. You could even most likely put it on a floopy. Recovery Console is smaller than floopy. In fact damn....i think you can make a recovery console floopy...im going to play with it. will follow up.

What are you disagreeing to?

all i said was fact that you can access the recovery console from the w2k bootable cd.

and further more the ERD commander 2002 is a much easier way to work for system recovery. unless you like getting differnt access denied errors and unable to access the network and very little control over devices.

i don\'t belive you will ever be able to get the recovery console on a floppy, for the main reason that M$ doesn\'t want you to.
