Can you do the following for me please

I need you to update your version of Hijackthis
Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE
SAVE it to your desktop
Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open

Under Main Menu, Select
Do a system scan and save a Log file
A log will open in Notepad
Copy and Paste the Whole log back here to the forum----It is all important!

In addition
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Thanks for the logs, can you do the following
Smitfraudfix has been updated
Open the  SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #4 - Check for Updates by typing 4 and press "Enter"
Press any key to continue, allow this access thru firewall if prompted
Again press any key to continue
Then press Q for Quit

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows.  A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

NOTE:running option #2  will remove your Desktop background, you will have to replace it in the Display options found in Control panel.

Back in Normal Windows
1. Post a fresh hijackthis log
2. Post the report from Smitfraudfix>> C:\Rapport.txt

Let me also know how things are running please

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Looks good, but I see leftover entries from Symantec's that may also cause problems
Do you know what version of Norton's you had previously installed?

Can I also see the following log
Open Hijackthis>>Open MISC TOOLS SECTION>>Open UNINSTALL MANAGER
Click the SAVE LIST... button
Save the list to your desktop then copy>>Paste back here the Whole contents

« Reply #9 on: September 29, 2007, 12:55:28 PM »
Can you do the following

I suggest that you add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

Your version of Java is outdated, older versions can be used to infect your system
  • Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2, The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language  and save it to your desktop (13.90 MB).
Don't install it yet

Close down all browser windows
Access your add/remove programs and remove
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Afterwards
I suggest that you try and remove remnants of Symantec's(Norton's)
Go to the following link and run the Norton Removal tool
Run STEP 3

After running and following instructions from Norton's

Install the latest version of Java from the installer on the desktop>>Allow internet connection

Come back here and post one last fresh hijackthis log and let me know how things are running

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Did you run the Norton Removal tool, I still see one last remnant of Symantec's in your log?

Go to START>>>RUN>>>type in services.msc
Hit OK
In the next window, look on the right hand side for this service
name---- Symantec Core LC

Double click on it--- STOP the service--If running
In the drop down menu, change the startup type to Disabled
Apply and OK out of there
Reboot the computer

Post again one last hijackthis log and let's see if it's still running
