Problems with bootable Win2K CD
« on: October 28, 2002, 09:57:16 AM »
Hi, all - I\'m having problems booting a \"bootable\" Win2KPro CD that I created.

* I have the Win2K install files from a multiboot Win98/Win2K Tech Support disk, which I have copied to HD and applied the SP3 \"slipstream\" to.  The root directory of my CD image tree contains the resulting identifier files (cdromsp3.tst, CDROM_IP.5, & CDROM_NT.5).

* I have extracted the 105 files (+ 2 files in SYSTEM32 subfolder) from the BOOTDISK subdirectory into the root directory.

* I have copied over BOOTFIX.BIN, SETUPLDR.BIN, NTDETECT.COM, & TXTSETUP.SIF from the slipstreamed I386 directory to the root directory.

* I am burning the CD using the shareware program RecordNow MAX, to a Memorex 4X Platinum CD-RW, in my Plextor PlexWrite 12/10/32A drive.

* I have specified the w2ksect.dat boot sector image file which I downloaded from the www.nu2.nu site.

* I recorded at 4X speed (with verification), a \"Track-at-once (not closed)\", Mode1, \"Microsoft Joliet ...\" session, with no problems encountered.

I can read the CD from Win2k (or Win98, for that matter), with no problems.  However, when I try to boot the CD from my Abit KT7A-RAID machine (WZ BIOS), using the Plextor drive that I burned the CD with, I keep getting a brief message, \"CDBOOT: Cannot boot from CD - Code: 4\" (after showing a single menu option for \"1. Floppy disk 1.44MB ...\").

I\'ve read some notes on the web about this message that indicate it is a driver problem, but I have booted both Win98 and WinNT CD\'s from this same setup, so I believe that it must be a problem with the CD I am creating.

What am I doing wrong?

I have not been able to use the cdrpack procedure from \"Bart\'s way ...\" because I get a message from mkisofs about not having owner privilege for the config file or something, even though I am running with admin privilege (only user on system), and it quits without writing anything.

use a CDR disc instead of a CDRW   CDRW\'s do not always work for making bootable CD\'s some systems just plain refuse to boot from them and as cheap as CDR media is these days there is no reason to use a CDRW
