1 usb hub, 1 keyboard, working with 4 computer??
« on: October 03, 2002, 12:18:05 AM »
I wasn\'t sure to post here or in hardware...but since if it can work it would come down to software control over which is which.

I have 4 computer\'s, a cordless keyboard and cordless mouse. They are usb. I want to use this keyboard and mouse on 4 different computer\'s. This possible? And how would the OS detect the device\'s and how would i toggle back and forth when the computer is.

I have a logitech cordless freedom pro and a cordless trackball logitech mouse. These are awesome for me. I love them and would never trade them in. However i have 4 computer\'s, with room for the computer\'s and monitor\'s, but no room for 3 more mice and 3 more keyboard\'s...these logitech device\'s are usb device\'s.

This possible and how with what?

Ive looked for a usb hub that can do this. each time i find one in a search that seem\'s like it can or even if it actually says\' it can. WHen i get to the website it no longer mentions this. it only mention\'s you can connect 4usb device\'s up to one computer.

I want to reverse the process of 4 usb device\'s to 1 pc to 4 pc\'s to 1 usb device.

yeh but i have thought about something to make me hold on that model.

You can see that in the picture...it only has 1 usb connection for each computer. How would that work?? I mean usually you have 2 connections for ps2/usb perp.\'s. Would this one connection via USB control both keyboard and mouse??
seems strange to me.

im gonna go with this one being i understand it :-)

As I see it ,it connects via usb , probably 2 or 4 connections on left side , and as usb hub , has four usb connections on the right side .
I have only two computers , I only use a monitor  switchboard  .I used to use aprinter and modem switchboard too , but there\'s allready too much cables as it is with the 5.1 sound system and  the usb hub and everything .

I never have understood this logic?! People insist on using hardware that is simple and easy to use and yet is NOT designed for mission critical and/or heavy usage. I mean don\'t get me wrong I am personally using a USB optical mouse.  But at least its not a bandwidth hog like sound devices, digital cameras, and monitor links. If you want to put your monitor, computer sound system, keyboard, and mouse all on the same system that is your perogative( but don\'t start crying when start having problems with your USB printer not printing out correctly because you have a million and one devices on the same USB port). A word of advice people keep at least one USB port free for your really important things. If you don\'t have a free USB port then add one(wait that means *gulp* I have to open the case).

Ok...that post is totally irrelevant...totally.

Whatever you meant is beyond me.

anyhow im going with the NON SUB one.

\"bandwidth hog\"...really...usb 2.0 even. Well i really dont\' know..i dont use usb anything directly. But usb 2.0 is like 25% faster than firewire so i wouldnt see bandwidth hog of anything with that transffer rate.

the last post is totally confusing...can anyone clear up that last post for me???

btw rdc...im taking you understand how it works...i still dont. How can 1 usb cable control both the mouse and keyboard???

i see what your saying...but what it also seems is that you have 4 periphal\'s you can use..but only 1 usb cable going back to share those 4 perp\'s to each computer...so..i you had a mouse, keyboard, printer, scanner connected...that would mean 1 usb cable is controlling all those right??

sorry im just still confused on how it would work...im still not going with it however...just interested in how that works

You\'re making it harder than it has to be http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\':)\' />  Remember this is USB, you can have over a hundred devices hooked up to those two usb ports on your PC.  This device is just acting like a hub basically.

Know those USB keyboards that have usb ports on the side to plug in a mouse?  Same principal kinda.  Only thing this device is doing special, is acting as a switchbox so you can have one keyboard/mouse for two pc\'s.  Least that\'s how I read it.

exactly what im thinking...but for my situation can i do without this 100usd device??? is there a way i could just share the usb key/mou with just a usb hub of sorts??

the disadvangte to the usb one is that you have to have usb on all 4 pc\'s...or a piece that can split 1 usb cable to 2 ps/2 ports...which i have never seen before whcih before now i never even thought about something like that.

anyhow...i want to use all the monitors for the pc...just share the keyboard and mouse to all of them. Im not too sure where to go.

however the other one that coast alittle more has ps/2 ports instead of usb...which is more convienant...for now. i know in the future it might not be usefull if ps/2 get\'s fased out for keyboards and mice...but this is defiantely a more universal way to go. atleast it does not require a unknown usb to 2 ps/2 cable\'s or usb on all machines...

i just want to share a keyboard and mouse to 4 pc\'s...looks like i would have to share 120+usd to atleast 1 company aswell :-|
