ok so I guess I'm not really advanced in the virus area of computers, but i recently got a virus that disabled my desktop background, disabled task manager, slows down the computer horribly, with an occasional redirecting websites to random ones.  i've tried everything so far that i can find and the files just wont go away.  I think it said it was a trojan p2pnetwork so i went and checked a bunch of forums about it and got bruteforce and hijackthis and bruteforce didnt fix it, and i dont know what to do with hijackthis.  i did get a log of it though.  Please help!?

Uninstall your version of Hijackthis, it's outdated
Access your add/remove programs and remove it
We'll update it in a bit

Afterwards:
Can you disable your spyware protections as they may interfere with these next fixes
AVG-Antispyware>>Right click it's icon by the clock and Uncheck Resident protection

Spysweeper>>Close it from the icon by the clock

McAfee>>right-click the McAfee VirusShield (VShield) icon and select "Exit" from the pop-up menu.

Afterwards:
Download [color=\"red\"]SmitfraudFix[/color][/url] (by S!Ri)
Extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Download Hijackthis Installer from [color=\"#FF0000\"]HERE[/color]

Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it

Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

i thought I would never get out of that without having to drop 50-100 on it.  thank you SO much.
I appreciate the generosity in helping everyone (not just me)  everything is back to normal now as in my task manager works again, the locations of the viruses no longer exist, my background is back, and it runs at normal speed and is back to its 2% cpu usage again http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'\' />.  So once again... Can you do the following for me please

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

• Download the latest version of  Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5.
  
• From that link scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5".
  
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
  
• Click the Accept button>>the page will refresh
  
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language (15.18 MB) and save to your desktop.
  
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

- Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    * Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    * J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    * J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2 [/b]

• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u4-windows-i586-p.exe that you downloaded to install the newest version.

Ok... Java is installed and such.  Just wondering though (my computer runs quite slow on start-up cuz i think it has so much stuff to load up) how do I edit what programs are allowed on startup? there's a lot of rarely used programs that i want to stay on the computer, but just stop them from running on startup.

With your browser closed, you can uninstall the following from add/remove programs

Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 2
also suggest you uninstall Viewpoint Media Player

Go to START>>RUN>>Copy then paste the next command below in bold
Then hit OK

combofix /u

This will uninstall combofix and it's components

download the [color=\"red\"]OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer[/color][/url].

• Save it to your desktop.
  
• Double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  
• Click the Cleanup! button
  A list will be downloaded>>Allow it Internet access if prompted by your Firewall
  Don't change anything in this list
  
• Select Yes at the prompt
  Wait for the confirmation box to open to reboot the computer
  Don't mouseclick during the wait as you may cause the tool to stall
  
• Select Yes to reboot Now
  

NOTE: This procedure will also delete OTMoveit.exe from desktop

Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Select>>Create a New restore point
Give it a name, any name,
eg... Casanova137
 and click Create
Windows will prompt when it was created successfully

When that's done

Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating

Select the More Options tab
and click Cleanup.. under 'System Restore'
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

I suggest that you add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1 by JavaCool  

*Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer

After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"

As far as startup entries, I like a little tool called Codestuff's starter

Decide what you need running
As eg.. From the following line in Hijackthis 04 entries
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
At castlecops link I can enter either of the following I bolded
And come up with the following
N rating, not needed on startup

Speeds up the time it takes to load the Adobe_Reader application. Your choice, but not required for Adobe Reader to function properly

Note the status of each entry
# "Y" - Normally leave to run at start-up
# "N" - Not required - typically infrequently used tasks that can be started manually if necessary
# "U" - User's choice - depends whether a user deems it necessary
# "X" - Definitely not required - typically viruses, spyware, adware and "resource hogs"
# "?" - Unknown

Disable what you feel you don't need running on startup
Of course leave your AntiVirus enabled

NOTE: If you still have slow startups after doing the above
Programs such as McAfee's Security suite have know to cause slowdowns on computers
This may be your case
