Computer Connection/Startup Errors
« on: April 14, 2008, 02:00:08 PM »
My desktop computer is having troubles at startup and is unable to connect to the Internet. Often times when explorer is supposed to load, I get nothing but a blank desktop with no icons showing. After tweaking with Windows Task Manager by running misc. new tasks, the icons eventually show up, but then I get lots of computer error popups (see screenshot).

The largest issue I have is an inability to connect to the internet. I use a wireless router which is working fine I believe (the laptop in another room can connect to the internet just fine). When I attempt to connect to the internet, I get the page saying something like "connection unavailable." I went to the local area connections and disabled and then reenabled it, but it stays on "acquiring network address" forever.

This problem arose yesterday when I didn't really do anything. Someone else in my family had surfed the internet for a short while (the site is safe and did not ever cause problems before). Then later in the day, I restart the computer, and I was unable to connect to the internet.

Thanks for any help or advice offered.

*I use an HP Windows XP Media Center Edition Desktop that is about two years old.

Are you able to run System Restore?
Try restoring before you had troubles
Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>SYSTEM RESTORE

If it works, let us know, there may be more problems that are hiding

Unfortunately, yes. I've tried restoring it to a few days before and also about two weeks prior to this. Neither try was successful.

Can you try the following
Download Hijackthis Installer from HERE
For an alternate download location, you can try HERE
SAVE it and transfer it to the desktop without Internet connection

Also
Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) and save>>transfer to Desktop

Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run it
Choose Install

Hijackthis v2.0.2 will open
Close it for now, we may need it later

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post back just the Whole contents of Main.txt and Extra.txt

Computer Connection/Startup Errors

As a troubleshooting step, is it possible to try and boot into Safe mode With Networking
Reboot the computer
As the computer is booting tap the F8 key

Select Safe mode with Networking

Are you able to connect to the Internet?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Thank you so much for the Safe Mode advice! Most of the issues have finally been fixed somehow. haha
First I tried "Safe mode with Networking" as you said, but the internet connection still stated "server cannot be found."
Then I decided to go to "Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)" and I was able to connect to the Internet. A windows update was also made so I'm wondering if that might have had something to do with my problems.
I restarted my computer twice now, and many of the original popups had disappeared, and my internet is finally working. However, one small issue still remains, although it isn't that big of a bother. I attached another screenshot showing the last remaining issue. SonicDVD is a disk burner software that came installed at the purchase of my computer.

Good work
But I do see an entry that is related to FlashDrive infections
Download the Flash_Disinfector.exe from here and save to desktop
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/s...Disinfector.exe
We'll need it in a bit

==Open notepad
Copy ALL the BLUE text below and Paste to notepad
Don't use anything else than notepad or the script will not work

File::
K:\servet.exe
Registry::
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{ed3be614-2afc-11db-a319-0015f2f1a5f9}]

Save this as txtfile on your desktop
name it:
CFScript

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------

I suggest that you do the following
Can you PRINT rest of these instructions, or save them to a text file on desktop for reference

Also NOTE:

1. Disconnect from the internet. Unplug the cable from the wall.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

This includes doing the following
Open Windows Defender from the START>>All programs menu
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Run Flash_Disinfector.exe, Follow the prompts
Insert any removable flash drives you may have when prompted

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Combofix will start>>Follow the prompts
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
Take notice: Combofix may prompt that the computer needs to reboot, don't interupt it
Allow it too

When finished, it shall produce a log for you  with the  name C:\ComboFix.txt..
I'll need to see that log

Reconnect cable to internet
If you don't get Internet connection within a minute
Reboot the computer

Post back all the following

1. Post the log from ComboFix
2. Post a fresh hijackthis log

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Follow the instructions posted http://www.thetechguide.com/forum/index.php/topic/22942-please-read-how-to-post-logs-from-frst/\'>Click Here

Computer Connection/Startup Errors
« Reply #9 on: April 17, 2008, 06:11:19 PM »
I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed in 2006, read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
You might want to remove the program. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

    * Viewpoint
    * Viewpoint Manager
    * Viewpoint Media Player

Also, in Add and remove programs, remove all older versions of Sun Java
This includes ONLY the following
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 2
Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 3
Javaâ„¢ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Leave Javaâ„¢ 6 Update 5 installed as it is the latest

Don't reboot till the last one is removed, then Reboot the computer
back in Windows

Concerning the Sonic DVD plus installing
I take it you want the software installed?
Are you able to go to
Start>>All Programs>>HP Solution Center>> and up load the update of MYDVD.msi.?

Can you in addition post a fresh hijackthis log

Haha, thank you. I was always wondering what viewpoint did.

I was able to fix the Sonic Installer issue after consulting the HP help site.

How is everything running now?

Do you want to post your own logs from FRST?

Good work, since everything is running better, can you do the following
Do a "System scan only" with Hijackthis and put a check next to these entries:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com

After you have ticked the above entries, close All other open windows
Including this one
Leave Hijackthis open and click FIX CHECKED
OK the prompt and exit Hijackthis

Go to START>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore
Select>>Create a New restore point
Give it a name, any name,
 and click Create
Windows will prompt when it was created successfully
When that's done

Go to START>>RUN>>type the following
cleanmgr
Hit OK
Let if finish calculating

Select the More Options tab
and click Cleanup.. under 'System Restore'
This will clear all later restore points except for the one you just made

Ok the prompts, it may take a few seconds to remove old restore points
Ok again after it's ready and let it finish cleaning

Go to START>>RUN>>copy then paste the next entry in bold

ComboFix /u
Then hit OK
This will uninstall combofix

download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Click the Cleanup! button
A list will be downloaded>>Allow it Internet access if prompted by your Firewall
Don't change anything in this list
  • Select Yes at the prompt
Wait for the confirmation box to open to reboot the computer
Don't mouseclick during the wait as you may cause the tool to stall
  • Select Yes to reboot Now
NOTE: This procedure will also delete OTMoveit.exe from desktop

I suggest that you add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster  by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Startus>>enable all protection

Take a look at miekiemoes' site with other ideas on How to prevent Malware:
