external modem problem

hi
   i have got a US Robotics external modem for my computer. it was working perfectly till the day when my friend dropped in and tried some new cable from the modem to the port. after that while iam trying to connect using the modem it connects first and within 30-40 seconds it disconnets. i cannot figure out what the problem is. when i tried using it with other computers it works well. it doesnt work only in my pc. i have formatted my hard disk and loaded everything afreash including the drivers. but the problem still persists.can anyone help me out?

I guess the obvious question would be did you try changing the phone line back to what you originally had?  Also, what OS are you running on this PC and the other PCs?  If you're running a different OS that may have something to do with it.  Also you can try moving the modem to another slot, if another device is interfering with the modem's operation, generally this would fix it.

Sorry, just read that you had an external modem.  So you can't try another slot, but you can try another serial port if you have two.  If you just have the one, try changing the irq and other settings in the bios, that would accomplish the same thing.
