I got Yoog Search on IE and Firefox
« Reply #20 on: December 12, 2008, 03:08:44 AM »
Normally, we can just remove a couple lines from prefs.js and delete another couple files
In your case however, I suggest that we uninstall and reinstall Firefox

Can you do the following please

First, download a fresh copy of Firefox and save it to desktop from here
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Export a copy of your bookmarks in Firefox
In Firefox, click on Bookmarks>>Organize Bookmarks>>Import and Backup>>Export as HTML
Save a copy to your desktop

If you would like to remember saved passwords
In Firefox, click on Tools>>Options>>Security>>Saved password>>show passwords
Take a screenshot of the screen
Alt+Prnt Scrn buttons
Open MSPaint from Start>>All Programs>>Accesories>>Paint
Click on EDIT>>PASTE
Save a copy to desktop

Next, close Firefox
Uninstall it from Add and Remove Programs
Find and delete these folders
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox <- folder
c:\documents and settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox <-folder

Reinstall Firefox
After installation of Firefox, you will need the Flash installer
Download  the Flash Installer for Firefox from this direct link and save it to desktop
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flash...lash_player.exe
Close firefox and double click on the flash installer, once installed, you can delete it

Next, Open IE7
In IE7, beside the Address bar, is a Search bar
To the right of the search bar is a magnifying glass and a drop down arrow
Left click the drop down arrow
and select>>"Change Search Defaults"
If you see "Yoog Search" in the list
Highlight it and Remove it
Then highlight Google and set to Default

Let me know how things are running afterwards
Post back a fresh Hijackthis log

I f***ing love you dude.

You saved my PC.  I can't thank you enough.  Yoog Search was gone from both lists, everything is running perfect.

For future reference, you do know where the Yoog malware is originating, and where it is being picked up from?

Can you do the following
Delete RSIT.exe on desktop and it's folder
C:\rsit
Delete DirLook.exe and it's file C:\DirLook.txt

Go to START>>RUN>>copy and paste the following then click OK
ComboFix /u
This will uninstall ComboFix and it's components

I suggest that you add SpywareBlaster to your protection software
SpywareBlaster  by JavaCool
    *Will block bad ActiveX Controls
*Block Malevolent cookies in Internet Explorer and Firefox
*Restrict actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer
Select Manual updating when installing
After installation, Check for updates
After updating, select "Protection Status" on the Left
Then select "Enable all Protection"
"Check for updates every couple of weeks"
after every update just simply click the "enable protection on all unprotected items"
or again, click on Protection Startus>>enable all protection

Take a look at miekiemoes site with other ideas on How to prevent Malware:

As far as I can tell right now, it's being picked up from trying to install Cracks
Downloading from FileSharing programs or irreputable websites

Do you know what version of Symantec's you had installed?
I still see leftover of it
Do you see the following in Add and Remove Programs
Symantec KB-DocID:2003093015493306

Deleted all the stuff,
Haven't DLed any cracks or anything recently.  The last thing I DLed was a Resident Evil 5 Demo, but that was clean.

And no, I don't see the Symantec in my Add and Remove

Can you Download CCleaner from the following link
http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
Choose the bottom download
CCleaner v2.14.763 - Slim

Save it then double click to Install
When installing, untick all options except for the Desktop Shortcut
In an open CCleaner window
Click on TOOLS on the left
Then in the right hand window
Look for Symantec KB-DocID:2003093015493306
If you see it, Highlight it and click Run Uninstaller on the top Right

Reboot and then come back here and post a fresh Hijackthis log please

Can't seem to find Symantec in there.

Oh, and by the way, I'm getting this awkward thing now (I was looking up sources for a paper I'm writing) where if I click a link, it'll take me to an advert.

Like, here's an example.  I was searching for sources on the Kent State Shootings of 1970.  Found a site, clicked it, and it gave me like this.. "Kent State Coupons!" page.  I backed up, clicked it again, and got the proper page.  Then it did the same exact thing a tad bit later, except with a different url, but the same "Kent State Coupons!" advert.

Any ideas?

Go here and download the Norton Removal tool and save it to desktop
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...&view=docid
From Step 4
Run it and follow the steps as outlined in parts 1. 2. and 3

Reboot when required, if not asked to reboot, do it anyways please

After rebooting, can you run RSIT.exe again, only post the log that opens...Log.txt
