Can't burn

I have an HL-DT-ST DVD+- RW GSA-H21N cd/dvd burner. I can read/play video and music, but I can no longer burn any media at all. Awhile back I "cleaned up" my registry using ErrorExpert, and I deleted CyberLink's Power2Go (now have it reinstalled, after having again cleaning up my registry). I'm quite sure that one or both of those actions now prevents me from burning anything. I was able to burn prior to those actions though.

I've found some info at thetechguide.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t77071.html, and followed some advice by "guestolo" posted Jul 17 2008, 06:26 PM regarding creating a fix.reg file, deleting the DVD/CD Rom drive, and rebooting. I tried a burn, and the task still failed. I've searched for updated drivers, only to have WIN XP tell me that I have the latest driver. By the way, when I tried to do a burn from Power2Go, I get an "Error Code: 0xeb020b88". Darn, I hate when I read someone did a registry clean, then problems start
Did you make a backup before deleting?

A clean install of the system may help, refrain from registry cleaners in the future
Do you have the latest firmware installed for your Burner?

Have you tried different burning software?
Did you do any registry fixes from that link you posted where I helped another with the issue

Can you do the following
Open Notepad (START>>>RUN>>>type in notepad)
Hit OK
Copy the contents of the CODE box, not including the word "code"
Paste it to the empty Notepad file
In Notepad click FILE>>SAVE AS
Change the Save as Type to All Files.
Name the file as Export.bat

regedit /e Export.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"Double click on Export.bat, a text file called Export.txt
should produce on your desktop

No, didn't do a backup prior to the "cleaning". I'm really thinking that it was the uninstall of the CyberLink Suite though. But, I'm not sure anymore. I did a clean XP install, but unsure if it was before or after the burner wouldn't burn. Ok on refraining from registry cleaners... howEVER http://images.thetechguide.com/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif\' class=\'bbc_emoticon\' alt=\'B)\' /> ... I 'did' just do another cleaning today, but have learned to back up my registry. I sure don't like using it though, because of the ill-effects it can have. Just at a loss with this burner.

Not sure on the latest firmware installed. I went to emachines and couldn't find any information. I found, in my add/remove programs, that I have a Realtek High Definition Audio Driver. That's for Vista, I believe, so don't know why  I have it for XP. That shouldn't cause any problems with the burner though should it? I have contacted Realtek on that.

Yes, I did the Fix.reg, double clicked it, allowed it to merge. Then I deleted my CD/DVD Drive, and then rebooted. A test burn after that failed.

Ok. I did that, and did a test burn straight from my E drive afterwords, and that was successful. Did another test burn, and had a failure. Tried a couple more times, including using Power2Go. Failed. The latter program gave me the same error as mentioned in my first post above.

Are you just using one burning program, and Only one media?
Have you tried a different brand of CD/DVD to burn with?

Can you try an alternate burning program
Try [color=\"#FF0000\"]cdburnerxp.[/color]
See if it's your burning program

Take note: You will have to have At minimum or Above
Microsoft's .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 installed to have it run properly
You can take a peek at your Add and Remove Programs, put a tick in "Show updates"
See what version you have installed
Then install the latest version of CDBurnerXp afterwards
Very easy to use, I'm sure you will figure it out, let me know if it works please

Yes, E drive is my burner. I've tried tackling this issue before with other burning software and various brands/types of discs, to no avail. Thinking about just going out and getting a new drive. If I do, should I remove the registry entries for both of the "reg.fix"s? And if so, how do I do that? Thanks for all of your help thus far.

If you do, try running it thru the burner, see if you have any luck afterwards

I've deleted burning software as an attempt to fix this, but I'm sure that there are still drivers and registry commands hanging around here and there. I'm able to burn mp3's, on new media (Sony CD RW), but on playback, on any source, it's hanging or skipping a moment here and there. Still can't burn DVDs.

One thing I'm noticing is that under my burner's properties' autoplay tab for "DVD Movie", under "select action to perform", in addition to the regular program options to run, I'm seeing two strange options:

() (could be an elongated zero)
using <need provider>

and...

()DZ
using <need provider>

For "Music CD", it's option is only that latter choice. For Music Files, Pictures, Video Files, and Mixed Content, there are no options avaliable. It's blank. I don't have PowerDVD installed yet... wanted to try to fix these bugs... so can understand no option for "Video files". Maybe my program associations are all messed up??

I have my autoplay set to "Prompt me each time to choose an option", so it's no big deal. Just curious what those options there are tho, or even how to delete them.

Nevertheless, I've ordered a new burner. A [/font][font=\"Times New Roman\"]Pioneer DVR-113KG 20x Dual Layer DVD RW with Lightscribe and Nero-8[/font][font=\"Times New Roman\"]. Only $39 bucks with shipping... hope it's a decent one! Because I paid for Cyberlink's Power2Go 6, PowerDVD 9, and PowerProducer 5, I probably won't use the Nero though.

So, my plans are...
Try the cleaner as you've suggested. Then try the new burner when it arrives. If that has trouble, I have my docs, photos, music, and important programs backed up on an external hard drive so I'll do a clean install of my Windows Media Center. I have a very important job interview the 19th, so who knows when I'll get to it, but I'll let you know how it goes. Honestly, before I ordered a new Burner, I would of tried that first
After registry cleaning and this start to muck up
Well it's obvious, do a repair install or clean install
The burner is probably fine, in my opinion, keep away from the registry cleaner

It can do more harm than good, perhaps the new burner will work, but you will never know if the old one still works
unless you try the repair or clean install
