Service Pack 3 install problem
« on: October 30, 2002, 05:58:00 AM »
I am running WIN2K Professional on an IBM Thinkpad.  The only software I\'ve added (from the original install) is Norton Utilities and Roxio Goback. The only updates I\'ve made is from IE 5.5 to 6.0.  I am attempting to install the Service Pack 3 for Windows.  The software patch loads and installs without any errors, but when I attempt a reboot, I receive the following error message:

\"Load error.  Press A to reboot\"

No matter which key I press, the same message appears and continues on and on.  I restored the operating system (via Goback) to the backup prior to installing the SP3 patch and my system is back running.  Any ideas why this error is occuring?  I have searched a few websites via Google and cannot seem to find this problem reported.

P.S.  I do not have my virus package loaded - Microsoft claims that any virus package should be disabled prior to installing SP3.  Thanks.  Nick

SP3 killed my Win2kSP2 thinkpad also. The only advice I have is to slipstream SP3 and then install the result. I got a little more error message text, but in a nutshell, the same thing happened. I have been traversing the Knowledge Base about this, and have so far found nothing at all.

the goback software from roxio is not recommend to be installed for windows XP or 2000, it will brake the system.

kill that program and then try again.

Yeah, I know.  Posting 2 months later...

Just wanted to say for posterity that I have GoBack 3.11 running on both my Win2K box and my WinXP box, and it was installed and running for SP1, SP2, and SP3 installs on Win2K and for the SP1 install on WinXP.  I had no such issue.

Then again, I don\'t own a Thinkpad.

I would bet real money that the original user (thread poster) had either a corrupted or incorrect Hard Drive Filter driver loading on the system.  When he/she installed SP3, the act left Windows trying to load a driver to filter Hard Drive access through that was either missing or broken.  This is a guaranteed way to get Windows 2K or XP to die on boot.

Best guess:  IBM had RapidResume or RapidRecovery or something like it (system restore, like GoBack) on the system and it naturally had to have filter-level access to the Hard Drive.  Installing SP3 either removed the reference without changing the data structure on the drive to allow standard (non-filtered) access or removed the driver without removing its reference.

I don\'t know all the facts in this particular case, but you might want to consider updating your bios. I have installed w2k on numerous ThinkPads (new and old ones) and whenever w2k failed to boot or install it was because the TP\'s bios was too old and didn\'t support w2k.
